Moving to Louisville

Hi!  I'm moving to Louisville w/DH and DS in two and a half months (ack)!  I was wondering if anyone could please give me some ideas on where to look in the NE part of town with good schools, ideas for good daycare (DS is 5 mos. old and if possible I'd like to find an in-home provider).  Any other advice or help would be greatly appreciated.  DH will be a resident at Children's and we don't know anyone down there, don't know where to look, etc.  Thanks a lot!

Re: Moving to Louisville

  • Welcome to KY!  Unfortunately, I can't help with your questions - I was raised in Louisville but currently live in Lexington - but I hope you like Lousiville as much as I did growing up.  It's a great town!

Make sure to come back to the KY board when you get settled!  [h]
  • OK - so is your DH doing residency at Kosair's Childrens Hospital downtown Louisville or is there another location in Lou.?  If you're wanting a place to live in the NE end of town, that's quite a drive for your DH - if it's the hospital downtown.  anyway, the NE end of town is pretty nice and new.  very suburbian.  i'm not sure if there are many nesties on here that have kids, so not sure we can help you much w/ daycare.  hopefully, someone will respond w/ a lot more help than i can give!
  • i'm actually moving there this weekend.  i don't know if this will be of any help or not but i was told to stick to the hurstborne, anchorage areas.  i was also told DO NOT GO WEST of I65!  and i think the south part, okolona area is a little iffy.  hope that helps at least a little!!

    good luck!

  • Also, look in Oldham County.  That is the newer developing area.

    GL and welcome to KY!
  • If schools are your number one priority then Oldham County is the place to go. However that would mean a 30 minute commute (or more depending on traffic) for your husband. Seeing as how your son is very young I would assume schools do not have to be at the top of your list. Some neighborhoods in the east end of louisville that you might be interested in...depending on your budget might be Polo Fields, Brownsboro Glen, Craigs Creek, Forest Springs, Wolf Trace, Worthington Place and TONS more. Even living in this area would make your husband have about a 20 minute commute (or more depending on traffic) each day. One place you might be interested in looking is the St. Matthews area. It is VERY cute. It has older homes, but the neighborhoods in the heart of St. Matthews have a lot of character and are near lots of stuff. The commute to downtown is not quite as long from there. I highly recommend searching around on www.louisvillerealtors.com. You can search by the different areas of Louisville. You would most likely be interested in areas 3, 8 and 9. ( I am really into house hunting...if you can't tell. Hahaha) Hope this helps. Good luck!

  • thanks so much, girls!  all that info is actually very helpful.  oldham county does look far and a little rural to me.  i am very excited to start looking and make louisville home.  it's a great city.  i think you're right about schools not necessarily needing to be the major decision making factor.  there are at least 5 years before DS starts school.  plenty of time to get acclimated to the area.

DH will be working downtown.  he likely won't have to fight traffic a whole lot b/c he will be coming/going during off hours but still something to consider.

    thank you all so much!

  • Hey, congrats to your husband!  My DH and I are both residents in Louisville and we both grew up here so are quite familiar with the city.  Most residents that we know live in the areas of town called St. Matthews, Highlands, and Crescent Hill (these would be areas 2 and 3 if you're searching real estate websites).  These are the "older" historic parts of town, but St. Matthews has many newer homes (newer being a relative term, you won't find new contruction, but you'll find plenty of homes built in the 70's or 80's that are in great shape).

The reason most residents live in these areas is the proximity to downtown - you can get there easily in 10-12 minutes or less without getting on an expressway, which tend to become more backed-up with traffic.

Some residents who really want a new construction home choose to live further away in the areas near "the Summit" (off Brownsboro Rd. in the far east end).  Living out there will necessitate using the expressway to get downtown, you really can't go "back roads" from there.  It would probably take 15-20 minutes if there's no traffic, but if he is ever going in later when the traffic picks up, like 8, it could definitely take longer.

As for schools, it depends if you're looking for public or private.  There are plenty of good private schools in all of the areas I discussed above (we have TONS of Catholic schools in Louisville and also a few other non-Catholic and non-religious options).  Most of the public elementary schools in these areas are fine, but the quality drops off a little for middle and high school (FWIW, I went to public school K-12).

I can't really help with child care as we don't have kids yet.  I would see if he can get in touch with any of the current peds residents or maybe the dept. coordinator can get him some info or contacts.

Louisville is an awesome city and everyone I know who has come here from out of state ends up loving it - I know several residents who have chosen to stay here after residency rather than going back home.  The city really has so much to offer while still having a pretty low cost of living.  I hope that helped a little and please let me know if you have any other questions about Louisville.

  • To respond to some of the pp....I would say definitely do not look in Oldham County.  That is simply too far for a resident to live from the hospital.  My husband and I don't feel comfortable living further than 15 minutes, but we do know some people who live a little further (like 20-25, like out by the Summit or in Hikes Point).  When you need to get there super early every minute counts.  Anyway, that's my opinion as a resident.

Another neighborhood that several residents live in is Audobon Park, so that's something else to consider.  Overall, though, considering your kids and schools, I think St. Matthews is your best bet.  The houses are nice, it's close to many good schools and parks and it's very convenient to amenities such as malls, groceries, banks, etc which is good since you all are new to town and you won't want to have to drive very far to find these sorts of things.
