Houston Nestie working in Louisville, need derby advice

Hi ladies

I'm a houston nestie working for a company in Lousiville.  This is my 3rd year with the company but my 1st to attend the derby in May.   It is a company event and we have seats in a 'box', and I have no idea waht to wear.  I work with all men, the staff support are women and try to help me out on what to wear but they are all a bit older than me so they're not really following current trends.

I'd love to find a cute bubble dress but everything i'm finding online is silk...and it hink that is a no for the derby, right?

Here's one i love but i think may be not so appropriate for a work event (its much cuter than the model portrays ... she looks a bit slutty...) due to the lower cut top.

Re: Houston Nestie working in Louisville, need derby advice

  • The big thing for Derby is hats.  ...and yes, people really do dress up for Derby, especially in the box seats!  I think this dress (or another silk dress) would be fine for the event (assuming you also feel it is work outing appropriate) but if you want to throw in a hat you'd fit in even more. ;)
..as a frame of reference think about the Polo match scene from Pretty Woman or any movie that has polo matches for attire purposes.  Cocktail dresses or dressy sun dresses with cute hats/shoes/accessories work well.

(Oh and your seats at the even dictate attire as well.  If you were going to the infield I'd tell you to dress like you were going to a frat party in college!)

  • Since you have box seats, be sure to dress up as much as possible. I love the silk dress and you would find others in silk as well.  But like pp said, the big thing is actually the hat.  Find a big, awesome hat and you're good to go!  Have fun!
  • you'll see all types - even in the boxes.  the one thing you definitely need and will want is a hat!  ladies will be in suits, dress pants and tops, sundresses, etc.  the easiest way to explain, i think, is imagine going to a really nice day wedding + a hat.  also keep in mind the bizarre mid-west weather.  it might be cool, hot as all get out, rainy, etc.  definitely keep tabs on the forecast.  have a blast!!!
  • houston, check out this link.  go to the photo galleries and you'll get an idea of what you'll see at the Derby.  http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?Category=DERBYFUN
