Louisville weekend before Derby?

Greetings from an Akron, Ohio nestie!  I'd appreciate your advice on something:

DH and I were thinking of doing a roadtrip to Cincinnati, OH and Louisville, KY. The weekend before the Derby would be good for us but we're wondering if things will already be a little busy by then. We would like to visit the Derby Museum- do you think we should pick an earlier date? TIA!

Re: Louisville weekend before Derby?

  • It will probably be really busy because the Derby Festival starts two weeks before the Derby.  It may be difficult to find a hotel room.  The Derby Museum is great, but I would go earlier or later if I were you.
  • Ditto Ragsdale!  =)

My senior prom was at the KY Derby Museum, and it is very nice - you should definitely try to visit sometime.  Could you stop in Louisville at the end of your trip?  Maybe after Derby?
  • DH and I got married that weekend and didn't have toooo hard of a time booking hotel rooms for that weekend.  I actually think it could be a lot of fun (just book now!) - I believe the balloon glow and race are that weekend and, of course, the chow wagon is in full force. . . .
  • i didn't think the wknd before derby was too bad either.  if you can find a room, book now.
  • HI Heather, I work for the convention Bureau here in Louisville. The weekend before will be a great time to be here. Right before the big rush. The KY Derby Museum will be fine to go to at that point. If you stay downtown you will be able to walk to a lot of our other museums as well as to a lot of the events. You can get discount hotel rooms through www.gotolouisville.com they also have a lot of great events that you can look at on there. Also www.kdf.org has a list of the KY Derby Festival and what would be going on that weekend. Hope this helps.
  • Thanks ladies for all the great advice!  I'm very excited to visit- see you in April!
