Ideas for long weekend trip?

DH and I want to take a long weekend trip in early April, but don't know where to go!!!  We will probably drive, so we're looking for a city within 5-ish hours driving distance.  The agenda is R&R, but we might want to do a little sightseeing.  Any suggestions?  We went to Chicago last summer, so that's out.  Thanks!!

Re: Ideas for long weekend trip?

  • Oh gosh, there are so many places!  I don't know where you live, but I think you would enjoy the following:  Indianapolis, Nashville, Cincinnati, Asheville (Biltmore), and Charlotte.  All are wonderful!  Have fun!
  • Have you ever been to the Smokey Mountains? I know Gatlinburg conjures up images of tacky tourist stuff, but DH and I have been there twice now and it's really fun. If you rent a cabin it's great for R&R, they have hot tubs and great views and you can hike and see stuff that isn't totally tourist trap-like. Check out americanpatriotgetaways.com for some cool cabins. Charlotte is supposed to be nice too, but I've never been so I don't know much on that. Indy is fun, great city and easy drive. I got robbed at gunpoint in Nashville a few weeks ago - so obviously I wouldn't recommend going there! :-) Hope you have a fun trip wherever you go.
  • Asheville would be my second choice to Chicago.  The Biltomore is great and you can make a full day touring the grounds and winery, the town is very artsy and quaint with great shops and restaurants, and there is tons to do in surrounding mountain towns. If you got a cabin in the mountians how could you not get r&r.
It is about 4 1/2 hours from Lex.
  • I'm all for in-state travel - KY has some of the best parks in the country!  You can go to Cumberland Falls, Barren River Lake, Natural Bridge, or John James Audubon.  Check out http://parks.ky.gov/.

Gatlinburg is fun for out of state travel.  The Biltmore House is also a great place to go.  If you've got a little more time, maybe Washington, D.C.?  I haven't been there in years, and have been wanting to go there with DH sometime soon.

    Have fun!  =)
  • OH! We went to Gatlinburg and loved it! There is a pib of the cabin we stayed at, it had a hot tub, jacuzzi, and a built in pool in the second level of it. It also had a pool table tvs in every room and two playstations. We loved it, there is so much to see and do. We went on the ski lift which was fun. It was all around good time, and because they have hotels and cabins you can do it on just about any budget.
