Corgi?

My Husband and I are wanting to get a Corgi so badly.  I just think they are the most hilarious dogs and they are so adorable with thier little pointy ears.  I promised my 11 year old sister that I would get one and we would name it Batman.  Does anyone know where to get Corgi pups in the area?  Or know of anyone with a full grown Corgi they can't take care of?

Re: Corgi?

  • That's awesome you are looking to get a dog.  I would check a shelter or adopt from a rescue group.

Here are a few links I found for local rescue groups:

  • Research the breed before you get one.  Make sure this is the right dog for you.  Not saying there is anything wrong with Corgi's - it's just a good idea to do this with any breed you are planning to adopt.

By the way, I have a corgi mix and corgi's shed something awful.

  • Hi!  I have been checking the STL board lately b/c my hubby and I are possibly moving to the area - we are actually coming to the area next week to visit for the first time.

But anyways to my point - we have 2 corgis!!!  They are the best dogs!!  Let me give you a brief description from our point of view: demand a lot of attention, always right under your feet (need to know where you are going and what you are doing at all times), very smart (will train you before you train them), very treat orientened, love everyone, very active, love to cuddle, love being outside.  They are great dogs - we got Lucia (who is almost 3) b/c we saw one and just fell in love.  She is my cuddler, and sooo smart but also stubborn!  She would rather be in your lap or out saying hi to someone than anything else!  We then got Turner who is now close to 9 months - and he is our crazy little man!  He has so much energy - and is the most happy when he has been out playing ball for hours and is tired!
I could go on and on about this breed and how much I love them.
Though I must say they are not for everyone - like I said above they are very demanding!  If you want a dog that is just going to chill and chew on it's toy, and leave you alone - the corgi's are not for you!  Please email me if you have any other questions!  I also have lots of corgi pics if you want to see some.  Email me - brycem@htrsi.com.

  • What kind of Corgi do you want?  A Pembroke Welsh Corgi or a Cardigan Welsh Corgi?

Start with checking out a breed club, or go to Petfinder to locate a Corgi in need of a home.  If you want to find a reputable breeder, post on the Pets board and we can help you.

  • oh and duh we have pembroke corgis

  • Hi, wow, sorry it took me awhile to respond.  We have done some research on the breed and decided that we want a Pembroke Corgi.  I have always thought they were adorable and have wanted one, but I wanted to get a house first.  So as of this summer, we will be buying a house.  I was out running the other day and I saw a lady walking one at JB Park and I just know I have to get one.  Also, MrsMartin, I will definitely email you.  I still have a few questions, but thank you so much for the helpful information.  Thank you all.
  • We have a pembroke welsh corgi, Scooter (pics in my bio). They don't dock their tails here so many people think he's a cardigan. I LOVE Scooter with my whole heart but we will not be getting another Corgi. When I read up on them before chosing the breed I read that they shed twice a year. That's completely untrue. He sheds all year round and twice a year it's a super shed. We have to vacuum every day and keeping the car hair free is impossible. His hairs are long and coarse and get into your clothing, furniture...everything and have to be picked out by hand sometimes. I love love love him but the hair is just too much.

That said, he has a wonderful personality. He's so friendly, loves EVERYBODY, is great with kids, plays well with other dogs and is just all around a fun dog. He's easily the favorite dog of the neighborhood.

He has TONS of energy and can play all day. He loves to play ball and chase anything you'll throw. He's also a bit demanding but with the right training that can be curbed. He seems to get hot easily in the summer (even though summers here aren't extreme) so we end up taking him for shorter walks more frequently when it warms up so be sure you have the time.

He was easily potty trained and is so super smart. I taught him tons of tricks in a short amount of time. He's a bit of a piggy so we feed him light food to keep his weight in check. He's stubborn but it's a part of his personalty I learned to love.

Like I said, I LOVE scooter to death but we won't be getting another corgi in the future. If I could have him minus the extreme hairloss I'd have a million of them though!
