best deal on carpet?

We are closing on a home soon and want to replace some of the carpet. Just wondering if anyone has shopped around for it recently and knows where I should go for the best deal. TIA! We'll also be on the lookout for blinds/shades so if know a good place to go for that too let me know :)

Re: best deal on carpet?

  • We got new carpet for our basement last year from Sandy's Carpet World on Watson Road near the intersection of Lindbergh/Watson.  I checked prices all over, and they by far had the best deal for the quality of carpet we wanted.

We just got new carpet last month. We found Becky's and GCO had the best deals and they'll price match each other. We went with Becky's because they had what we wanted in stock and GCO would have to order it. We were very pleased with how they communicated (called to say they were on the way) and with installation.

  • We've gotten carpet from Lowes and Beckys.  Both went well and were reasonably priced.  I know Lowes was having a sale a few weeks ago for $189 whole house installation, but I'm not sure if the sale is still going on.

We got custom blinds from Lowes when there were have a Bali sale - they seem to have Bali on sale alot.

Yes, our home away from home is Lowes.

  • If you're looking to do the "whole house" or several rooms, there are great installation fees at lowes, home depot, etc. (at least there were a few weeks ago). With that said, if you're thinking to do one room and such, maybe going to some of the places other folks listed above... GOOD LUCK :)
  • We just bought basement carpet from Michaels Carpet off of Mid Rivers Mall Dr and Hwy 70.  We looked at Lowes, HD, Becky's, GCO, and a few other places.  Michaels is just a little mom and pop type store, but they came out and measured for free before we even put money down on the carpet.  GCO was very confusing, lots of double talking and they wanted to cut the carpet all funny so that we would have had three seams instead of the one that we have now.  I think the salesperson was trying to confuse us, and I believe his measurements would have been wrong.

My parents got new carpet last month as well and used Edwards.  They too had some pricing issues- they were quoted one price and the guy came out and measured, and jacked it up.  They told my parents they would do the stairs for free, but then added in other costs so that it balanced out.  My parents have done a LOT of work to their home, and they said this is one place they will never do business with again.

Watch the fine print at Lowe's and HD because it excludes certain carpets.  We wanted basic builder grade carpet with the best pad.  The carpet we wanted did not qualify for the special installation.

  • We just got carpet installed in our basement and we went with GCO.  We had a pretty good experience with them.  We checked GCO, Becky's, Remodeling Room, Lowes, Home Depot, Edwards, Contracting Flooring Supply, and the Flooring Center and found GCO had the best price.  The Remodeling Room in St. Charles came in a close 2nd to GCO as far as price.
