Moving to STL in around 6 months (sorry kind of long)

Hi girls,  I haven't posted on this board because we currently live in San Diego, and when I can to ask something I saw another 2 post of girls moving to STL.  My DH and I are planning on moving to Saint Charles or Saint Peters sometime soon (it could be 4 months-9 months from now).

Right now I'm only waiting on a house I own to sell, after that we're planning on visiting STL (I've never been there, I've been to Kansas City, MO and Trenton), but my DH went last November to visit one of his friends from the Navy and that's what made him decide on MO to move to; and once I get a job out there (I work as a Quality Engineer, and I have a degree in Electronic Engineering) we would move.

Because of how expensive houses are here (at least 400,000 for an ok house, that's not centric and has no land) we had considered moving away...  And now we're thinking specifically of those places, since we can buy so much more for about half the price and with more land.

So...   I think I have some of the areas down and he really wants to live in St. Charles since it's where his friend lives, I also know that you have to be careful with the school districts because not all of them are great (we currently have no kids... that's another reason we're moving, we just can't afford for one of us to stay home if we have kids here).  I know about the seasons and about tornadoes a bit.

Is there anything I NEED to know before moving?  Can you tell me about taxes, HOA, other property taxes?  Any good tips on the city or any other thing I should know?  Also, I'm hispanic, he's white, do you think that would be a problem for us our of (future) kids?

Last but not least...  Do you have GTGs over there???  I would love to have some friends once I get there, you know :-)

Thank you so much for your help ladies!!!

Re: Moving to STL in around 6 months (sorry kind of long)

  • I can't help too much with the St. Charles area and schools, since I live just outside the city limits in Shrewsbury, though I can tell you how much I love Main Street in St. Charles.

I am also a California transplant!  I grew up in LA - well, technically, the San Fernando Valley part of it.  I hope you love St. Louis!

And we should do GTGs.  I am semi-new to the board and would love to meet nesties in the area.  I know that a lot of the girls on this board have young kids, but it would still be great to plan something at some point.

    Good luck with your move!

  • I also can't tell you too much specifically about the St. Charles area (I live in the city), but I don't think you'll have any problem with you being hispanic and him being white (at least I really hope not--I'd be really shocked/horrified if you did).  MO is a great place to live and a great place to raise kids.

  • HI there!

I actually live in Saint Charles, feel free to email me and we can chit chat through email back and forth in regards to all your questions!  My email is lilmufish at hotmail dot com.

  • Hi!

I live and teach in Saint Charles.  I have lived in this area my entire life, so I could probably help.  Msg me on this board or on the Dec 07 board on the knot if you come up with more questions.

Schools and taxes vary depending on what part of the county you are in, but I know they all are a lot less than San Diego.

    HTH! :-)

  • I just moved to O'Fallon...not St. Charles, but in St. Charles county. If you are interested in this area, just email me (kimesu at gmail dot com) and I can try to answer any questions that you may have. We love it out here!
  • Wow, so far I'm impressed on how sweet you all are and willing to help :-)

I just saw something (on Wikipedia I think) about Main St. in St. Charles, that should be fun!!!

We looked at some houses (on Realtor.com) in O'Fallon so that could be one of the places we look into when we go.

OMG!!!  I used to spend my summers, growing up in San Fernando Valley!!!  Mission Hills to be exact, right across from Holy Cross Hosptial, my aunt still lives there!!! :-)

I'm pretty sure I'll be emailing you sometime soon...  As soon as I can think of more questions :-)

    Thanks again!!!

  • This board doesn't do many GTGs anymore.  A lot of the girls have moved over to http://www.stlwed.com/forum/index.php

Its a local board that ones of the girls started (you might notice that a lot of people use her BIO builder on the Nest).  Anyways, they do a TON of GTGs over there.  You should go visit and tell them you are moving to STL.  They are a great group of girls.  I believe several of them live in St. Charles or St. Peters.  When you go over there...the "Life Goes On" Board is like our nest board over here.  This board is not as active anymore.

Good Luck with everything!  I hope to see you on the other board.
  • Thanks for the infor on that website... I'll check it out :-)
  • I also live in St. Charles and love it here!  In my opinion, Francis Howell School District is better than Fort Zumwalt, and those are the two main ones in St. Charles county.  I am a Spanish teacher and have friends that have worked in both districts, so that is what my opinion is based on.  Your ethnicity should not cause you any problems; like a pp said, I would be extremely surprised if it did.  St. Charles is not the most racially diverse city, but there are a significant number of hispanics here.

I don't think there is anything that you need to know before moving; St. Charles is a safe, family friendly place and you get a lot of house for your money!

    Good luck with your move!
  • We do have G2G's.  I don't think they fact that you're hispanic and he's white would have much effect here.  Can't really help with your location questions b/c we live in Jefferson County (about 30-45 minutes away from St. Charles) and the taxes range greatly depending on what county you're in.  Good luck and let us know when you're coming.
  • We are currently building a house in O'Fallon.  I think you'll be amazed at how much house you can get for your money here.  But overall, it's a great area and I think you all will really like it.  And I don't think you will have any issues being Hispanic.
  • I know I am late responding.. but I live in St Peters and am a transplant here to marry my now husband.

Its a great city, if you ever want to talk or get together , my email is michellegremaud@yahoo.com

This area is real diversified.. I am Korean American and my husband is American and we don't have issues with the community.
