My husband and I are looking to getaway for something romantic. Any suggestions for somewhere semi close? We are considering Gatlinburg right now.
Re: need a getaway
Gaitlinburg TN; Branson, MO; Nashville TN; Chicago IL; Louisville KY; Cincinnati OH: Wisconsin Dells WI; Brown County IN; French Lick IN; St. Louis, MO; Kansas City MO.
I will warn you that if you haven't been to Gaitlinburg, be prepared because it is just the start of the tourism season and it gets crazy down there. The same goes for Branson and Wisconsin Dells as well (we've visited our timeshares in all three locations on the off season and it was still a bit too touristy for us).
It sounds like you want something secluded and romantic and Brown County Indiana would probably be a good bet because it isn't as cheesey touristy and you wouldn't have to battle as many crowds. You could also rent a very nice and secluded cabin/house in the county.
You could probably get a really nice hotel room in FR/West Baden; Louisville has some adorable B&Bs - we stayed at the Austin Inn and pretty much had the run of the place. STL has some great deals downtown and KC is an amazing city to visit.
Gatlinburg is GORGEOUS. It can get touristy, but it just depends on what you want to do. H and I booked a cabin in Pigeon Forge and only went into Gatlinburg to the shops and whatnot one day. We love to hike though, so we spent the rest of the time doing that and horseback riding. If you do some of the harder hiking trails or go fairly early in the morning they aren't as crowded. I know most people probably don't want to get up at the crack of dawn to hike up a mountain, we're strange. If you do decide on Gatlinburg cabinsforyou.com has some great prices on cabin rentals.
I'm also going to second Brown County, IN. I was a camp counselor there for a summer and it was amazing. It's very pretty and Nashville (Indiana) is the cutest little town.
I know you said you didn't want to travel too far, and I don't know how far you'd be willing to go, so I'll just go ahead and throw Savannah, Georgia out there. H and I are planning a small vacation for the fall and that's where we're going. It looks like there's a LOT to do down there.
Snow!
