rent condo vs. hotel????

we are 1st timers coming to San Diego this May for 5 days. we like to walk on the beach & boardwalk, casual food & margaritas, stroll touristy beachy shops & bars. location is important, we want to stay ON the beach. we want a budget hotel or condo rental, less than $150/night. we'd like to not have to rent a car....so please tell me which of these places (or any other recommendations!) are best to walk to things to do, and shuttle/taxi to the attractions. we would really love a pool & jacuzzi at a hotel, a jacuzzi at a rental. I understand those are hard to come by.

       1. condo rental - thoughts? $99/night. location? http://tinyurl.com/349wjc

       2. condo rental $175/night http://tinyurl.com/2vx329

       3. condo rental $99/night http://tinyurl.com/2jo2bl

        4. Ocean Park Inn Hotel - on Pacific Beach $139/night. I really like the look of this one!

       5. Ocean Beach Hotel - in Ocean Beach $122/night

Re: rent condo vs. hotel????

  • There's no link for 3 & 4. But it looks like 1-3 are all in the same area (blocks apart). Any of them would be fine.
  • They're all basically the same location.

Really you're biking distance down to Mission Bay/Belmont Park which is an okay area. It's not La Jolla or Coronado in terms of nice tourist attractions. The bars/restaurants in Mission Beach are pretty cool, but there isn't active upscale nightlife. You can, however, spend a day at Canes eating lunch and enjoying margaritas (just as you describe above), all with an ocean view. So that part I like.

Also, just an FYI, May can often be a gloomy month. So the beach might not be hot, it could be like 68-70 and overcast (we get lots of gloom in May and June). But then again, we could get a heat wave and it could be 75 and sunny at the beach, you just don't know. Just expect either one when you get here.

In terms of attractions you're closes to Sea World and Old Town. A taxi downtown would probably be about $20 (just guessing).

  • Ditto the pp's about the location.  Pacific Beach (PB) is a pretty "touristy" area, but I think you might get bored if you just stayed there for the five days.  The cool thing about San Diego is the trolley can take you to a lot of places as well (like downtown).  You could trolley to downtown and then taxi to Balboa Park area and that shouldn't be too expensive.
  • I am leaning towards Ocean Park Inn Hotel.... for the price, location & amenities it looks like a good deal.

I should also clarify - we will likely have a rental car & plan on doing day trips all over San Diego. We just want to stay in a good location within walking distance to shops, restaurants, boardwalk.  We look forward to going to La Jolla, Coronado, perhaps downtown to a Padres Game, and some of the parks.

I am also thinking about staying 2 days in a nice hotel that's more romantic... any recommendations for a hotel and area?  how about romantic restaurants in different areas?

  • Your original e-mail said you didn't want to have to rent a car.
