Cheap dates in San Diego -- give me your best suggestions!

Money is tight right now, but my SO and I would still like to go out, any suggestions of what we can do for cheap (or hey, free's even better!).  Open to just about anything.  Thanks!

Re: Cheap dates in San Diego -- give me your best suggestions!

  • During the summer Balboa has a lot of free concerts. There are free Saturday symphony concerts in Old Town starting April 22.

San Diego Art Museum has Culture and Cocktails once a quarter and it's $10.

So many great places to take walks at. Compile a list and make a date every week to hit one. Maybe grab a slice of pizza afterwards.

Shout House is $5 before 6:30 or 7pm (double-check their website) and has big-ass beers for cheap.

SideBar has a happy hour that is really cheap. Slices of pizza are only a buck if you get a beer.

What kind of activities are you looking for?

  • Oh, I am so in love with this post.

The hubs and I do a lot of random stuff that's cheap/free. But now as I'm thinking of them -- you'll probably all think we're silly.

    But...since you asked...

Feed stale bread to the ducks at Mission Bay

Long walks on the beach :) followed by dessert somewhere (cheaper than going out for dinner, but still that "sense" of going out.

    Botanical gardens at Balboa

    Visiting art festivals/art galleries

Since we're members -- sea world and the zoo

I'd think of others, but I got to go!

  • Our favorite cheap dates are those that involve the outdoors.
    - The Penasquitos Reserve walk to the waterfall
    - Taking our dogs on walks around our neighborhood

Also, we subscribe to Netflix and always have a movie night once a week. We rent a lot of foreign or indie films. We open up a bottle of some inexpensive wine and then when the movie is over there is always something to talk about. We don't just watch the movie, we really think about it and analyze it- (we've learned a lot about eachother from this exercise).

-The self realizatoin center in Encinitas is free

    - On the weekends, there are a lot of little shops and places that are fun to browse in Hillcrest (Pomegranate Home is my fav!).

    - Sometimes we pick a reipe from like Epicurious that looks really hard and get the ingredients and make it together. Usually it's a lot of laughing but good for teamwork! :)

  • Since I'm not working, basically everything we have to do is cheap!!!

    - BBQ by the bay- we bring our grill, a few burgers, and some firewood...its so relaxing!

    - Cheap happy hour, wherever in our neighborhood, then go back home and cook dinner with cheap wine!

    - Find a fun recipe, cook it together with some wine (the food is usually a disaster)

    - Take the ferry to Coronado, walk around, hang out on the bay, then come back

    - Ride our bikes along the bay/embarcadero, stop and have a picnic or throw a ball around

    - Have our own happy hour on our roofdeck, just relax and watch the sun set, its even better than being out at a bar!

    - Just watch a movie at home :)

  • You girls are inspiring!  I feel like we always do the same old dinner and drinks thing on the weekends.  I really like the netflix idea of picking a different movie every week.  I might have to use that one!

I also like the Coronado Ferry idea.  We take bikes and you can ride the ferry over and bike around Coronado.  You could pack some food in a backpack and eat dinner on the beach.

  • I love this post! I love walking along the embaradero ...riding the ferry over to Coronado ...throwing a football around at a local park ...we go down to 32nd street and look at the Naval Boats... dinner on the beach at Hotel Del Coronado ... home making pizzas and watching sports center... hiking the Tenaja Falls in Riverside County ...

And one of the BEST things to do while out...is make love :) That is free and one of my personal favorites.

  • ^^Just an idea...not saying that I am one of those people...LOL.
  • I don't have anything to add to everyone else's contributions, but I'm so happy you asked about this.  I'm going to have to use some of these ideas with my husband.
  • another idea. . . when we knew we were moving here, i went online to the sd convention & visitor bureau website and ordered an info pack.  along w/ the typical "planning guide" book, they sent us a "25 fun & free activities in sd".  every weekend is a mini vacay for us!  we've also seen a freebe mag about "101 things to do in sd".  wished i'd picked it up!  too busy grabbing real estate mags!  ha! ha!
