San Diego 1st timer!

DH used to live there while in the Marines, 13 yrs ago.  We want to visit (my 1st time) and I'm sure soooo much has changed since he's been there.  We are early 30's, like to stroll the beach and 'strip/boardwalk' (i.e. Huntington), like to eat/drink outdoors, casual, probably do the zoo/balboa park/seaworld.  We will likely visit mid May or June.

Can you recommend what hotels/areas we should stay?  We'd like a hotel on the beach if possible, or a hotel where we can walk to things to do. Low budget, want clean room in good location.

Can you recommend other things to do?  We're from Chicago & used to city life & traffic :)

While there, we will also be scouting out areas to move to!!!  Likely not for at least a year, but we want to begin our research on where to/not to move to.  We will hopefully have an apartment finder company drive us around (any rec's for one?)  Looking for a 1-bedroom apartment to rent in a safe area, near enough to office jobs, as well as things to do.  Just a typical suburban city where it doesn't take 2 hours to drive to the beach.  Any recommendations on what areas are good/bad?  When we look online, we have NO idea what's good or not.  What are rent prices like?  What areas have the office jobs?

Re: San Diego 1st timer!

  • Places to live near office jobs is TOUGH- my husband works downtown (where we live, also) but I was working in Sorrento Valley, about a 20-25minute commute. You could look downtown, and also UTC/La Jolla area. UTC will be cheaper than downtown. We're in a 2b/2b for 1925 in little italy...

I'd probably stay downtown if you like to eat/drink outside, there are SO many great restaurants/bars. Plus its only about 15 minutes to pacific beach if you want to go to the beach and stuff. If you want to stay in PB, we've had friends stay at the Surfer Hotel for a good rate, and its RIGHT on the beach near all bars and stuff, very fun! Good luck and have a great trip!
  • I second the surfer hotel.  DH's sister was in town last week for work and she stayed there.  I didnt actually go there but she wouldnt have stayed there if it wasnt clean.  If  you are looking for a reasonably priced hotel downtown the Gaslamp Plaza Suites is good.  We had our guests for our wedding stay there in January.

I also live downtown and work downtown and it is very nice!  :)  I love having no commute but a lot of the jobs in SD are in Sorento Valley, or La Jolla like pp said.

  • Thanks for the feedback.

Which has more restaurants and casual beach bars to walk to - Mission Beach or Pacific Beach?  Looking into a beach condo rental in either & I don't know which is a better proximity to stuff to do.

    Thanks!
  • I think Pacific Beach is a better option.  Definitely more beach bars.

  • Can you recommend a 5-day itinerary for us?  We will have a car, though I don't know where things are in relation to each other + driving times.  We'd arrive Sunday 11am and depart Thursday 7pm.  We're casual, like strolling around or rent bikes, on a budget.  We'd like to do the following, but not necessary:

    - walk around condo/hotel on the beach/boardwalk.
    - casual tropical drinks at a beach bar
    - outdoor dining and/or good seafood
    - walk around other beach towns doing same things
    - sea world
    - visit at Camp Pendleton (DH used to be in marines there, can we still go onto the base?  He's not in anymore but does have current veterans ID)
    - can we have our own beach fire? how do we do that? what's provided & what do we need to buy ourselves?
    - zoo maybe
    - balboa park maybe
    - downtown area maybe for dinner
    - visit Coronado maybe
    - dinner/sunset cruise somewhere maybe
    - of course hang at a beach for a few hours!

tell me what you think we ought to do, and how far the drive is in between.  include places to visit for lunch & dinner
    :)
  • Ok, you can definitely do a beach BBQ/bonfire- they provide pits on Coronado and all over the bay. Just bring firewood and a starter log.

You can go to Coronado and probably have a nice seafood dinner somewhere over there, I don't have any reccommendations, sorry :(

A fun beach bar to hang out at all day I like is Wavehouse in mission beach- you can watch the surfers ride this man-made wave, its awesome. Plus its all outside, sand, firepits, etc. Food's ok, but you don't really go there for the food.

You can rent bikes downtown and on Coronado, for sure. Probably at all beach areas too, so that is easy.

Old Town is fun, too, for Mexican. Its nice to walk around, have a margarita, etc.

Sea World will prob take 1/2 a day, same for the Zoo. Lots of walking at the zoo, its HUGE.

Umm, I forget everything you said in your post b/c I can't see it anymore, lol. But hopefully that helps with a few things and gives you some ideas.

  • Another beach bar that is fun (but small) is Lahaina's.  It is a house on the boardwalk that they converted to a bar between Mission Beach and PB.  The wave house is really fun to.  It is much bigger.

As far as bike rentals me and DH did that this weekend.  We don't have bikes of our own so we go to this shop on fifth ave. downtown and rent for the day. I can't think of the name but it is next door to Fred's Mexican cafe.  (Which is very good for Mexican food.) You can bike down to the waterfront and take the ferry over to Coronado.  It is fun to bike around the island and look at all the houses you wish you could afford.  :)

There are fire pits at Crown Point, Coronado, and OB but you have to get there early to get one because many times they fill up.

  • Hey there =) How exciting to plan your first trip out here - I'm sure TONS has changed in the last 13 years... if you're still interested in looking at neighborhoods, I have tons of connections in local san diego real estate (being a Realtor). I can recommend an apartment finder company, or spend some time with you myself to help you figure out some great options for when you move here. Just let me know if I can help! Call me or email me: 858-602-8180 or emelie@YourCoastalLifestyle.com...

    HTH!!!
