The DH and I want to go on a little get away vacation...we are not quite sure where we want to go...we would have a Thursday night trhough Sunday...our goal is to stay around $500 and we have been looking at a cruise to Mexico...but those seem to have a lot of hidden fees (dining, beverages, excursions)
So what do you suggest for around $500? We have one night free in San Francisco if you want to work that in somehow....
Re: Mini Va-cay Recs...
I was going to suggest a weekend in Santa Barbara!

Well SFO would be feasible if you tweaked the budget up a bit and were totally flexible with your travel weekend.
Virgin America flies SAN to SFO and they still have quite a few $39 each way promo fares available. Since you have a free night at a hotel, you would only have 2 additional nights to pay for.
So airfare and hotel would probably run about $500 and then you would have to add money for food.
Other option--wait til the Food and Wine Weekends up at the Disneyland Resort. If you have annual passes, you can see if there is a decent passholder rate at one of the disney hotels or you can find something cheap right across the street.

Look into this...it is too much to explain here.
Basically you use free re-bids and bid on Priceline. The forums will tell you what others have won. If you bid for 'Union Square East' for lets say $70-4 Star, and you lose. Normally you would have to wait 24 hours. But, if you use a free re-bid zone, you can add 'South San Francisco', but b/c they don't offer a 4*, you'll never win one there, but you are allowed to increase your bid to like $75. You need to make sure of this on Pricelines website though and make sure they haven't changed their star ratings...There is stuff on permutations too. There is a whole science to it!!!
Use your free hotel day and bid on the other days. Good luck.
How about Catalina?

As a girl who doesn't gamble, who married a Las Vegan (is that how you say that?) who doesn't gamble -- I will say that there is a lot to do in Vegas that doesn't involve gambling, surprisingly. You could stay at a hotel by the strip -- tour that Hoover Dam (apparently it's way cool inside, I don't want to go because I fear the whole thing will crash on me!), go on the rides, go shopping (better than gambling because you have cute clothes to show for it in the end!), eat yummy food, and it's been really warm there recently -- so just lounge around at the awesome pools!
But my pick would be SF -- I love it there. We have been talking a little about going there for our first anniversary. The public transportation is the fun trolley -- so you wouldn't need to rent a car -- we always went and got a 7-day trolley pass with unlimited usage, so you can go anywhere. It works for public transit to the airport too. And I love Alcatraz. I know people say it's touristy and overdone - but i think everyone should go do it once! They did such a good job with the audio tour!
