I need a new job

So, I kind of had a mental breakdown this morning.  I just got married in January and all of that was great.  But during the six months leading up to the wedding I was so busy dealing with all of that I did'nt care that my job was boring.  Now I feel so un-challenged.  I really need to just bite the bullet and start looking but I'm really scared of change.  I make o.k. money and my bosses are super nice but I do such menail tasks.  It is not the "career" I saw myself in.  I have a bachelor's from SDSU and I just enrolled in one of there certificate programs but I think I need to just find a new job.

Sorry about the rant.  Just needed to tell someone!!!!!

Re: I need a new job

  • Totally understand being frustrated with a job that really doesn't require a degree and is so unchallenging you want to take a nap through most of the day.

Think of this. You handled the massive change of getting married. If you could do that then a job change will be fine. What field do you want a career in?

  • My degree is in Philosophy so I never really had a specific job in mind when I graduated.  I worked in the hotel business for many years and would love to get back into that.  I'm thinking I would like to work in HR.  That is what I do now, I work for an employment lawyer so I have learned a lot about HR and employment practices.

  • I hear you -- sometimes I think I'm having a quarter life crisis! I'm not a fan of my job, but I'm trying to enjoy it's nonstressfulness and enjoy life in other ways. Sorry, that's not much help!
  • I am right there with you. I was actually thinking today. "Why am I even here"? It sucks when you feel like a child could do your job. I am actually in the middle of looking for a new job but I am like you scared to leave my current job with the fact that maybe the new one wont work out. Hang in there maybe we will both find what we are looking for.

  • Thanks for the words of encouragement!

  • Is there an opportunity for you to take on more resposibility in your current work environment?  I'm in a career (military) where I don't have the luxury of changing jobs whenever I want, so I've learned to ask for new challenges and try to get more training when it's available.  It's your responsibility to make sure you're getting the most out of your job.  Your bosses may not be aware that you're not being challenged.
  • Being under-challenged was a main reason I left my last job, but let me tell you, I really wish I was employed right now! Being out of a job sucks :(

Maybe just start casually looking...you'll find something! (hopefully quicker than me!)

  • I'm right there with you ladies, glad to hear I'm not the only one. Good luck to everyone who is looking, what are you guys looking for?  I've talked to many people about these issues and everyone keeps telling me to look at the retirement plan because although you think you are healthy and young now, time flies by and you really want to have a little bit of security in the future.

  • That is really important for me as well.  My DH does not have health insurance now and we are thinking about eventually having kids.  We just cant afford to pay for everyone to be covered and if for some reason one of us were to get sick the other would be stuck with all those medical bills!  Point being, health insurance is really important to me.
