WWYD? Job situation

So I?ve gone on two interviews for this one company.

On the positive side, it is a fantastic opportunity intellectually. From month to month, I would be responsible for the closing process and getting the reports out to management. In the shorter term, I would be working hand in hand with the controller and CFO to create an accounting policy in writing and helping to implement it.  I would have the opportunity to move up into an accounting manager function.  I would be working with external auditors. From this perspective it is a great opportunity. I?ve been made an offer.

On the negative, it is literally .02 more per hour than my current position. With that said, we are going through layoffs at work. I?ve been told I shouldn?t have to worry, that our department is pretty lean and safe. So there is a chance I possibly wouldn?t get the severance package anyway. But my DH thinks that if I accept and leave now that I am leaving a lot of money on the table as I don?t know for sure if I would get it.  The other factors are that I really don?t like my place of employment. There is a negative connotation and the atmosphere is dismal. I?m worried about falling into a grass is greener mentality.

Any advice? Should I counter? The benefits are comparable. ( I wouldn?t get my snow days but I would be able to work from home.)

Re: WWYD? Job situation

  • Make a list of the pros and cons.........I'm not sure I would stay in my current job in hopes of getting a severance package, especially if you've been told that you are "safe".
You could definitely counter offer. Either that or ask for a 90 day review with the compensation you are looking for contingent on that review.

  • I agree with pp.  I you were told your safe and you don't like the job, why throw away an opportunity for a few $$.   I would tell them you are very interested in the position, but need a better package.   Women are hesitant to negociate, but should.    Was a range posted and is your offer high or low?  What is the market range for that position?  Negociateing another week of vacation instead is also an option.
