Had to bring Sancho to the Vet ER... (long)

I've been MIA the last couple of days, so wanted to give you an update on our little family. Sorry in advance for this being so long.

Tuesday night, Sancho began to yelp. Only lasted a minute, but it freaked us the 'F' out. DH checked paws, legs, torso, made him walk around a bit, and found no where on his little body why he would be yelping. But, he just wasn't the same after the yelping. He was listless and would just sit and look at each one of us.

So, at 10pm, we were dressed and on our way to the Vet ER here in WHtfd. They checked him out thoroughly and then took a set of x-rays. The vet couldn't locate a fracture or a break anywhere in the x-ray. But, she did notice that he had an unusually large esphogus. She said he may have a condition called Mega Esophogus, which is actually not common in pugs, but it's something he was most likely born with. She also said it wouldn't cause him to yelp. So, she asked us to leave him there overnight for observation.

We were home just after 2am... and DH had to catch a 6am flight to Toronto. Guess what? He set the alarm for 4am, but woke up at 5:10. We raced to the airport and made it at 5:50, but they still wouldn't let him board. They said it was too late. When it rains, it pours, right? So, back home we went... exhausted from the lack of sleep, and sad to think about what may or may not be going on with Sancho.

I went to work for half a day and still, the vet hadn't called us with any word. So, DH called when I got home and talked to another Vet. She said Sancho slept through the night without any pain or discomfort, so they didn't have to give him anything for pain (yay!). They said he woke up lively and alert (double yay!), and that he managed to get every tech there to fall in love with him (duh!). She told us that the radiologist looked at his first set of x-rays and couldn't find any break or fracture, either, so they took a 2nd set of x-rays and confirmed that he did infact have a large esophogus. And began telling us worst and best case scenarios. Typically, dogs wth Mega Espohogus are thin because they throw up a lot and therefore can't digest their food very well. But, she observed Sancho to be a plump and well-fed puppy who eats and poops like a champ (her words, not mine.). She wanted to rule out any fibrous rings of tissue that might be pinching his esophogus to make it balloon up, so she asked us if they could perform a Barium test, so that they could see his esophogus more clearly. We said, "yes", hung up, and proceeded to worry even more. If he did in fact have a fibrous ring of tissure around his esophogus, they'd have to remove it surgically, and there were no guarantees that it couldn't grow back. All we could do was wait for the vet to call us back with the results.

Just after 5pm, she called us back with the wonderful news that he had no fibrous rings of tissue, thank God. She also said they still had no explanation as to why he yelped with us the night before, but that he seemed pain-free and has acted all day like a normal three and a half month old puppy. She said we were free to come pick him up and let us know that from now on, his dog food and water bowls had to be on a raised surface, and that we had to make sure he didn't lie down after eating. Not to worry, because Sancho is pretty active and only lies down either in his crate (he loves it in there) at night or when we're not at home or late at night, when he's pooped out from all his playing and jumping around and climbs into his big-boy bed near where we're watching TV.

So, by 6pm, 4 hours shy of his being there a full 24 hours, we were on our way back to the Vet ER to pick him up. They actually had us wait in one of their examination rooms so that the techs could say good-bye to him. I was seriously beside myself, because I just wanted to take him home already. When they finally brought him to us, he was the crazy little Sancho we knew and loved.. and nipping at our fingers (that alone told me he was A-OK)! They gave us some literature on Mega Esophogus and away we went.

We're so glad to have him home again, and thrilled that despite the Mega Esophogus, he's a relatively normal puppy, and with some vigilance on mine and DH's part, he'll grow up to be a normal, funny-faced adult Pug. We think that the inexplicable yelping episode happened for a reason - to make us aware of the Mega Esophogus. Everything happens for a reason, apparantly. Anyway, we now refer to Sancho appropriately as Mega Man.
