Funny MILism

I think my in-laws are out of touch with reality for a number of reasons. I thought I'd share the latest in-law-ism with you.

MIL heard on the radio somewhere that all first born children look like the father so that the father will be confident the child is his and stay around.  Personally, I think that was part of a joke or something.

MIL thinks this is an honest to goodness scientific fact. While DS does look like his daddy, I don't think it's because he's the first-born child. Now she's comparing all first-born children to their fathers to confirm it.

LOL, is that the craziest thing you ever heard?

Re: Funny MILism

  • I think there is a Darwinist school of thought stating that most 1st babies start out looking like their father even if their features change over time.

Coincidentally, DH also has a mini-me.

  • Actually, she isn't crazy.  I have heard that before.  I don't think it really applys to modern society but something believed from years ago.  I have a good friend that know some obscure stuff and she brought this up to me.   I tried googling it and I couldn't find it, but I didn't know how to phrase it.
  • I've never heard this before and I don't have any kids yet, but...my niece looks a lot more like my BIL than my sister!

Also, I don't see the resemblance, but I'm the oldest of three, and I always get told that I look like my dad!

  • also anecdotal but DS is a mini-me of DH.
  • I believe there's some truth to that. I don't know about the first born part, but, evolutionarily speaking, it stands to reason that offspring would start off resembling their fathers so that the fathers would feel a sense of connection that may have been necessary to make it worthwhile for them to go through all the effort of providing for the children. My DH's ego sure supports that theory. I believe I first heard about the idea from my midwife.

  • LOL, well Evan is a clone of DH and Ryan looks like me :) Not to give your MIL more evidence!

  • I actually did hear something like this, and it was not a joke. Although, I thought it was related to all newborns, not first-borns.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I think it's one of those theories you can find evidence for or against easily. I'm the youngest of 3 and resemble my dad the most. :)
  • Not to say that your MIL isn't crazy of course. We always support that in these parts.
  • so far, jack is 80% me I'd say.  He's got his Daddy's chin& nose, but other than that he's a mini me.
  • While I've heard this theory before, I agree that it can be "tailored" to fit whatever outcome you want! :-)  In our case, Elizabeth looks much more like me than her daddy.  Also, I'm a middle child and I look more like my dad than either of my siblings.
  • I hve heard that it's true.  They say the baby will look like the father so that the father will bond with the baby better.
