Re: Poll:Do you volunteer

  • Grace- I don't right now...but have in the past. I volunteered at an old folks home for about a year, i did this with my brother and Christina.  I think we did 1 hour a week.  The people there were always so happy to see us, it made their days to have someone visit with them.

If I were to volunteer again, it would probably be at an animal shelter, but at this point in life I do not have time.
  • 1)Do you volunteer? Not as much as I should, but I do participate in activities that are volunteer.  I am currently the team captain for a group participating in the American Heart Association Heat Work.  I also do fundraisers for the New Haven Animal Shelter and am a volunteer for the English Springer Spaniel Rescue of New England.
    2) What organization ?  See above.
    3) How did you choose that org?  Passion for what they do.
    4) How many hours do you commit? Non-specific.  Anywhere from 0-10
    5) Do you volunteer alone or with friends?  Usually alone or with DH.
    6) How did you start volunteering/initally get involved?  Opening my big mouth, asking around. researching groups, networking.

  • 1. Yes.

    2. Kids for Kids, Dancing for Life, Inc.
    http://www.kfkdancingforlife.org/
(Shameless promotion) We raise money for sick and needy children in the area.

    3. It was started out of the studio where I danced when I was 14 and I've been involved ever since.

    4. Lots! We have regular meetings probably 3-4 hours a month, but there is a lot more time around our big events. Our biggest annual event is next weekend and runs for 4 days.

    5. It's a family affair for me. My sisters are both on the board with me. My parents are former board members and my niece and nephew volunteer at our events.

    6. I've been volunteering since I was a little girl. We used to go and dance at nursing homes and hospitals and such. I also had volunteer service requirements for high school graduation and Confirmation.

  • Right now I volunteer at area college fairs, manning the booth for my undergrad school.  With work being crazy most of the time I feel like I can't really commit to anything in the evenings.  I'd love to get involved in something more "worthy" though.  I love my school, but I'd love to help people more than just convince them to attend an awesome school. :)

Something like Big Brothers/Big Sisters would be right up my alley, I love working with kids.
  • 1)Do you volunteer? ~yes
    2) What organization ~Special Olympics CT
    3) How did you choose that org? ~I got started back in high school as a ski coach.  I loved it so much that I got involved coaching tennis, softball, & volleyball as well.  I did that for many years.  Now I'm involved at the state level as a competition director for the volleyball tournament & as a committee member for several other events throughout the year.  I've been involved at the national and world games levels as well and LOVE it!
    4) How many hours do you commit? ~Depends on the time of year.  At certain times it's a few hours a week, other times only a few hours a month.  When we have a games weekend I'm there all weekend.  There are opportunities for volunteers at every level though.
    5) Do you volunteer alone or with friends? ~Well, I've become great friends with so many other people involved with SO that I'm always with people I know.  DH & I actually met through volunteering for SO.
    6) How did you start volunteering/initally get involved?
~A friend of mine in high school had volunteered and recommended it to me.  I called the SO state office and got teh info I needed to hook up with a local program.
  • I just remembered other volunteer activities that I participate in.

I also volunteer and read at the Daniels school in New Haven.  I'm a "reader" to young children (usually K-2).

Also do volunteer work for: Breast Cancer-walks and races, St. Jude, March of Dimes, Make a wish, HH and other non-profits. I did some work in China in 2001.
    3) How did you choose that org? We I have a LD so I started in Middle school my own after school program and continue from there. I didn't have much growing up so my mom made us help out individuals with less to make us realize we are better off, even if we don't have everything. It was a wonderful lesson.
    4) How many hours do you commit? 15 hours a week
    5) Do you volunteer alone or with friends? depends on the event
    6) How did you start volunteering/initally get involved? beside what I stated already....I remember when I was young a teacher told me that I would never finish HS because I couldn't read well...I wanted to help others out there that were going through the same issues. From 1999-2007 I have spoke at over 50 events about my Dyslexia and ADHD all over the U.S., I have works with Senter Chris Shayers and have done some grassroots lobby about the NoChildLeftBehind Act.

    5) Do you volunteer alone or with friends?
~ some areas I do it alone and others I work with a partner

  • 1)Do you volunteer? Yes

  • 1)Do you volunteer?
    Yes
    2) What organization
    PAWS Animal Shelter in Norwalk
    3) How did you choose that org?
I'm an animal lover, I had heard good things about it and it's close to my work.
    4) How many hours do you commit?
It varies a lot, but no more than a couple of hours a month. Because the shelter hours don't mesh so well with my work hours, I do mostly outreach work and website updates these days.
    5) Do you volunteer alone or with friends?
Alone, but I've met some very nice people there.
    6) How did you start volunteering/initally get involved?
I called them and asked how to become a volunteer.
  • 1)Do you volunteer?  I volunteer with the Junior League of Miami (they have a JL of Hartford, it is part of AJLI), and I used to devote time to my university and sorority as well as assisting a group on campus teaching salsa.
    2) What organization?  JLM, University of Miami, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and again, UM's Wellness Center.
    3) How did you choose that org?  The middle 2 are self-explanatory, I am an alum of both orgs.  I was a dancing student at the Wellness Center before they asked me to teach, but it didn't feel right taking money when most of the instructors were college kiddos trying to make a buck and I had a full-time job in "the real world."  Junior League is a great way to get to know your community, socialize with like-minded, female leaders, and network within and outside of your career.  Additionally, we are able to assist more than one cause through our effort because of how we are set up.
    4) How many hours do you commit?  Nowdays, much less.  I am down to just League work, and that alone is 2 meetings a month for administrative talk, then depending on what you are doing (fundraiser, community shift, social event), it could be anywhere between 6 to 15 hours a month.
    5) Do you volunteer alone or with friends?  Friends.
    6) How did you start volunteering/initally get involved?  I don't know, I guess I kind of fall into it because it seems so natural.  I've always been a part of groups that volunteer, and I consider these activities my "hobbies."
  • 1)Do you volunteer? Yes.
    2) What organization I coach w/ New Britain Mangan League Baseball - it's a 13-15 year old inner city baseball league.
    3) How did you choose that org? DH played for it as a kid and his father coached before he passed.
    4) How many hours do you commit? From April to August it's at least 8 hours every week.  Usually more.
    5) Do you volunteer alone or with friends? DH volunteers too.
    6) How did you start volunteering/initally get involved? I got involved with this thru DH.  But I've been volunteering my whole life.  When I was younger, I danced at senior centers almost every weekend.  I also volunteered at an animal shelter in Syracuse when I lived there.
