Who has been to Italy?

I am considering taking my mom for her birthday later this year.  She doesn't do well with a ton of schlepping, so I would like to pick one city where we could spend 4-6 days sightseeing and shopping without getting bored.  So, which city would you recommend?  Rome, Venice, Florence....somewhere else?  TIA!

Re: Who has been to Italy?

  • Rome.  There is a ton to see and do and if you are there for 4-6 days it give you plenty of time to see and do enough touristy things.
  • Been to Florence and was done with seeing the city in 2 days.  Although being there it's easy to get a driver/tour guide to drive you around to surrounding areas in Tuscany.  Maybe she'd be up for a few days of schlepping if someone else was carting you guys around?  Just a thought...we did this with one of our day trips (we got our own car for the rest) and it was really nice and very relaxing.  Have a great time whereever you go, I can't wait to go back!

  • Embarrassed to say I haven't been, but in true Carrie fashion here is what I have to say on the subject anyway:  Rome is touristy but may be good for mom.  Venice is stinky and not much to do.  Florence is paradise:  Uffizi, Pitti Palace (thank you college art history), beautiful, etc.

I have a few Italian friends through work and would be happy to ask them, though I'm sure you will get many answers in a few moments.

  • Ooh, I am also a big fan of Sicily.  It's very laid back and there are some beautiful mountain areas with really cute towns and B&B's.  As pp had said, and I agree, Rome is extremely touristy and to that point I wouldn't go back but I am happy that I have been.
  • I'd pick Florence, personally. I'd have to say Rome is my least favorite city that I ever visited. It just didn't do it for me. Florence OTOH was like a little slice of heaven on earth. I'd love to return some day...
  • I have been to your mentioned cities - I think of the above I would say Rome tons to see, great hotels, great eats. lots of ruins etc.

I liked florence - but unless you are very in to art you will only spend a few days there.

I did love venice - and it is not alwyas stinky. just don't go in the heat of the summer!! great shopping some art.

I also LOVED milan - though I don't think it gives you the "italian city" experience

Lake Como - is fab if you want a more relaxed pace

Cinque Terre - I would go back to in a heart beat!!!! but its very suited to active people. (its 5 villages ont he italian mediteranian) great beaches, hiking, local shopping etc. there is a train that goes between all 5 regularly durin the day.

Tuscany...ahhhh tuscany I could spend forever there!

  • Ditto MrsBonj on Sicily as well. My family is from there and my mother and grandmother spent a lot of time there (sadly, I have never been myself). If the pictures are any indication it is an incredibly beautiful place. My mom still raves about and she hasn't been there in years...
  • Man this post makes me miss my young "I don't have a mortgage or demands on my time" self.......
  • I've been to all the cities you mentioned.  If you're looking to sightsee & shop, I'd go to Rome.  Lots of sightseeing and shopping.  And, plenty to keep you busy for 4-6 days.  You could also take a day trip to Pompeii, which I highly recommend.  A little schlepping involved there but highly worth the trip.
  • 4-6 days in Venice might be too much.  Though, it is so amazing.

We weren't too excited by Milan, 4-6 days is 3-5 days too long.
  • I havnt been to Rome but I loved Sicily! We were in Taormino/Mt. Etna area and it was really nice.  I liked Venice but lots of walking and gondola rides are wicked expensive.

  • Go to Florence - great food, great shopping, great sights.  And you could do a mini-day trip to Sienna or Assisi - beautiful hill town cities.
  • We honeymooned in Rome and loved it. We found plenty to do and visit. We also did the day trip to Pompeii. It was incredible! We stayed at the Exedra on the Piazza de Republicca (sorry for the spelling) which is fantastic!   We picked Rome because there was a lot of things in the city that were on my to do list.  And while people say things are touristy, well, yeah I was a tourist. :0) As long as I didn't act like an ugly American, I was okay with it. :0)

I have some books you can borrow that I found helpful.

  • I lived in Venice for a summer so I think it's great.  I would never get tired of roaming the city and visiting the other little islands...Murano, etc.

Florence is wonderful.  I didn't like Rome quite as much.  Bologna is also a very beautiful city without so many tourists.
