I need a good frosting recipe

I'm looking for a good frosting recipe.  I don't really like butter cream.  I'd prefer something more sugary like wedding cake frosting.  Does anyone have a good recipe to share?

Re: I need a good frosting recipe

  • Becky,
What kind of cake are you going to put it on? Do you not want butter in the frosting at all? Perhaps a 7 minute frosting? I need more details about the cake it will be going on. Or will you just be eatting it with a spoon, LOL! ")
  • My favorite recipe...  Go to the baking aisle, choose your favorite flavor can of frosting that's on sale.

Sorry I'm no help, but jar frosting is just so yummy!

  • Here's a quick and dirty tip I picked up watching some random Food Network show - take your favorite tub of icing, dump it into a bowl and then beat it for a few minutes with your hand mixer.  I did it over the weekend and everyone thought that I had taken the time to make homemade frosting.
  • wedding cake frosting IS buttercream (unless its fondant which I dont think you mean - it just tastes like paste) - there are like 28 different types of buttercream though... simple buttercream is the super sugary easy one - just beat together confectioners sugar, butter, and a splash of milk (its on the conf sugar bag I think). If you want chocolate I really liked the one on the banana cupcakes in the blog...

  • whipped cream makes a good frosting too - just get some whipping or heavy cream, throw it in your mixer and beat until very still (dont overdo it or itll become butter).

Halfway through add a tsp of vanilla and some sugar to taste. yummmm

  • I know what you mean.  Some people make butter cream so that it tastes like lard with no taste other than that buttery lard taste.  yuck.  Mohegan Suns cakes used to taste like that, I'm not sure if they have changed their recipe or not.

You can try a butter cream recipe that seems sweeter (look on allrecipes).

We also make frosting using pudding mix.

We use chocolate or vanilla instant pudding mix.  I'll have to go dig up the recipe.  I only make this for DH's birthday because it is his favorite.  I think we mix the pudding mix with a little milk.  Then we fold it into the coolwhip and fold in some confectioner's sugar as well.

  • I made a peanut butter frosting this weekend and it was GOOD!

1 stick of butter at room temperature

1 cup of good quality peanut butter (like Jiff)

    2 cups of powdered sugar

    2-3 Tbls milk

cream together butter and peanut butter until well blended... add powdered sugar a little at a time. Add milk at end.

    Yummy!

  • cream cheese frosting is also really yummi
  • I'm planning to make cupcakes this weekend and after I frost them I plan to roll them in various types of toppings like crushed oreos, crushed heath bars, crushed chocolate mint cookies, etc.  We really don't like buttercream frosting (the kind that taste real buttery or like shortening).  We both prefer the kind of frosting that is so sugary you can almost taste the grains of sugar.  I tend to find that frosting on wedding cakes is sugary the way we like it (with the exception of Cakes by Donna - we HATED her buttercream which makes us think we don't like buttercream).   So that is what I'm looking for.  :-)
  • the simple/quick buttercream has that sugary grainy thing going on - that is probably what you want.

that is william sonomas recipe for it - it will NOT be greasy tasting... just make sure and whip it well sicne this type of frosting can tend to be less fluffy.

I have made this substituting the milk with baileys... omg so yum :)

  • Thanks Meg!!!!

Melany, your peanut butter frosting sounds good too.  I think I'll make a batch of that and top it with crushed peanutbutter cups.

  • I like the grainy frosting too! Sooo good! The peanut butter frosting is like that :)
