I think we have MICE :(

I heard the lil suckers gnawing at the wall last night. I dont know how to get into the wall area where they are. Any suggestions for exterminating them? I hate to kill them but I do not want them in my house!

Re: I think we have MICE :(

  • If  you think that they might be in the walls I would call an exterminator...we will occasionally get them in our basement and we use D-con and they are gone in a few says....do you know where they are getting in??
  • We have intermittent problems with field mice... The best first plan of attack is to around the foundation of your house very, very closely looking for ANY holes at all where mice can get in, even ones as small as a dime. When you find them, fill them with steel wool (the very fine grit, like 000 fine). It's very hard for mice to dig through. We plugged up six or seven small holes we found and it's helped enormously.
  • we got these supersonic things that you plug into the electrical sockets. They emit some kind of high frequency that drive away mice & spiders. We've seen them at BBB & Home Depot/ Lowe's.

sorry, i don't know what they're called, but we haven't heard a single mouse or seen a single spider since we got them. we have one in the basement, one in the garage, one in the kitchen & one in dh's office (because he's terrified of spiders)
  • If the steel wool doesn't work - nice call Nigoleta, I recommend Have a Heart Traps, peanut butter and then a long drive for them.
  • D con gets rid of the them every  time.  I hate mice too!
  • I would put down some of the glue traps wherever you think they may be getting in and out....likely places are the basement and the garage.  Wait a couple of days and if you don't get any on the traps, I think I'd call a pro in this situation.  We had one in the house, which really freaked me out, but it wasn't in the wall so we were just able to catch it with the trap and then plug all of the places we thought he might have gotten in from the outside.

Definitely don't use the poison stuff....the last thing you want is them to eat it and then get into the wall and die.  Gross.
  • I used D-Con for the mice in our shed.  For the mouse in your house, D-Con is fine for areas that the dogs/cats can't get to, but you may want to try the humane traps so capture them and then take them away.

They are smart little buggars.  I haven't seen any since we D-Con'd our attic last year.  Price we pay for living in the country....

I just hope its mice and not squirrels!  Then I'll have my FIL bring the gun.

  • We had a mouse this week too...which is weird...usually they come in when it gets cold...Anyway we use Humane traps after we catch them my Husband takes them for a little drive to the woods near the river and sets them free
  • If you go the D Con route (which I don't recommend personally), be ABSOLUTELY sure that children, cats, dogs, other pets CANNOT get to the D Con. My friend used to be a vet tech and treated way too many cats, dogs, pet rabbits, etc that got into the poison. Many times the outcome was not good. :-(
