Random ? - How do YOU clean mushrooms?

DH and I have completely different ways of cleaning mushrooms prior to consuming/cooking and I have been meaning to post on here to see what all you ladies do, esp. our cooking Nesties.  Thanks!

Re: Random ? - How do YOU clean mushrooms?

  • I usually just rinse them off, but if I had a vegetable brush or scrubber, I might use that, too.

  • i just rinse them in water and kind of 'scrub' the dirt with my fingers. I have a scrub brush thing but its too rough for the mushrooms, its more for potatoes. If i had a softer one I'd probably use that
  • I dampen a kitchen towel & brush them off. You don't want to 'rinse" them b/c they will absorb the water
  • I just wipe them off with a damp paper towel.  I don't ever get them really wet.
  • wipe with a towel - ditto pp about not rinsing

  • Actually, Alton Brown disproved that theory about mushrooms absorbing water on one of his shows. It's fine to rinse them.

  • See, I've always just wiped them with a paper towel to get the outer layer off...no rinsing, as they soak up the water.  DH rinses them and it drives me nuts...I end up drying the mushrooms!  I'll have to show him your replies...
  • We brush them off with a damp paper towel. Mushrooms absorbs water, so you shouldn't rinse them. If you need to rinse the mushrooms, you should rinse very quickly then dry them immediately with paper towels.

  • Oh, and according to Alton's experiment, it doesn't matter if you rinse them quickly, or soak them for ten minutes, they will absorb the same (very small) amount of water.

  • I heard that about Alton's experiment too. personally, I just dampen a paper towel and wipe them off. They're pretty much clean when we get them. Sometimes I get the pre-sliced ones and don't do anything with those.

  • The bruise easily, so I usually put them in a colander and rinse them and gently scrub them with a vegetable brush if needed.
  • I wipe them with a damp cloth towel.  I never rinse them.
  • I have heard all things, but I rinse them use my fingers to scrub and dry with papertowel.  They are either cooked or eaten quickly so I don't really give them time to turn color.
