Advice needed re: childcare
I thought I was all set with our daycare situation for the fall, but now DH's job situation has thrown a wrench into it. To make a long story short he used to work 3rd shift plus a part time day job. He thought he was going to quit his regular job and go full time at the day job, but do to a falling out with the owner of that company, he is now working at his regular job only. He is going to be working, starting today, on 2nd shift, which means 2-9:30. When we thought he was on days we signed the girls up for full time daycare beginning the last week of August. It's no big deal to switch them to afternoons only. That'll be great actually because we'll save some money. Here's the issue - DH's company shuts down every winter because it's in the construction industry & he gets laid off and goes on unemployment from December through the end of March. With me being a teacher I'm off mid June through the end of August. We only really need daycare for the fall and spring, but no centers are set up to allow that to be possible. Our center will let us pay for a week a month only in the summer to hold our slot, but that's only a special allowance for summer. So any ideas on what we could do? We hate the idea of paying for the winter when DH will be home so the girls will stay home with him (especially since this is our "low income" time of the year). We thought about hiring someone to come in to the house if we could afford it, but who would want a job that's afternoons only and only for the fall and spring of each year. Anyone deal with anything similar and find a childcare solution that worked?
Re: Advice needed re: childcare
I know there are some daycares affiliated with schools that run only during the school year. My neice is home with her parents for the summer and they don't pay for it.
If you found one like that, you might also be able to do only part time through the winter. You wouldn't have to send them every day but could on days when your DH might have appointments or errands.
Perhaps you can work with teh daycare to enroll the girls for the least possible amount every week in the winter? Like I know our daycare does two days a week minimum. Might be nice to have them keep going two days a week during the winter.
Something you probably haven't thought about - how is getting put in daycare for the spring, out of daycare for the summer, in daycare for the fall, out of daycare for the winter going to be on the girls? I think you may find it a huge adjustment for them. My suggestion would be to keep at least two days a week for the summer and winter - the twins will appreciate the consistancy and will be able to "grow" with the other children in their class. Plus - it would be really great for you and DH to have a couple of days to yourselves. If you can swing this - I think it would be your best option.
Check with the colleges in Hartford area too. We use a girl who lives in Colchester but commutes to Central to fill in sometimes, when my sister and father aren't available. So even though college is not in same town or real close there may be students who commute.
You may find that a home daycare is more flexible. I would think a sitter would be the ideal situation, though.
What about community college students? Isn't there Middlesex CC? They'd more likely be wanting a job in addition to school.
