Has anyone had their wisdom teeth out??

I need to get mine taken out and the dentist always told me they will need to be surgically removed.. One of them started growing in this past week and my mouth KILLS. I am scared to call the dentist because I am terrified of getting them out. Please tell me it's not that bad!

Re: Has anyone had their wisdom teeth out??

  • I had a great experience. I was eating mac and cheese that night. No infection, no stitches. I think its different for everyone. My doctor was great. Where do you live becasue I would highly recommend my doctor. Good Luck!
  • I had both of my top ones removed in January. It was not that bad, but were already completly in, it might be differnt if they are inpacted.

I got the office @ 2:30 & was headed back home by 3:15.

  • I had mine out...it wasn't too bad at all. I only took one pain pill right after the gauze came out for the last time, but other than that the pain was tolerable and short. I had a dry socket too that had to get packed with some medicated goop for a little bit, but even that wasn't unbearable.
  • I had all of mine removed when I was 17.  I didn't feel them being taken out, though I did hear cracking noises and felt pressure.

I could definitely feel pain once the local wore off, but if I had taken the prescribed Percocet a little earlier, I don't think I would've felt much.  Once I did take them, it was all good.

After that first day, I think I just took OTC pain relievers.  My cheeks swelled a lot and I had bruising, but everyone is different.  I remember watching a lot of videos at home that week!

It's best just to call today and get it over with -- you will do great!
  • Oh and all of mine were impacted.
  • I had four impacted teeth removed three weeks ago.  You might be able to go back and read old posts! You'll be glad once this is all done and over with.
  • I had all four out in college. Mine were impacted so surgical procedure as well. I had some dissolvable stitches but recovery was quick and not too painful. I ate lots of pudding , mashed potatos , etc.
  • I had all of mine removed when I was in HS.  They were all impacted.  I was under general anesthesia, so I don't remember a thing!  I know the surgery didn't take long and I don't remember feeling bad after..  Honestly though, I didn't really "wake up" until a couple of days later.  But that's just my general reaction to anesthesia.  My neighbor had hers out a week after me and was up and walking around without a problem the same day.
  • I had 4 impacted teeth removed when I was 16 or 17...they gave me the laughing gas and I was out for the whole thing. I was pretty swollen and changing the gauze for the first day or so was pretty gross, but I don't remember too much pain. I slept a lot afterwards and just laid in bed and watched movies for a couple days. It's not that bad, but you will need some time to rest afterwards (if that's possible with two little boys!:)
  • I've never had them out- but I just wanted to tell you I sympathize w/ the pain.  I have one coming in and there is nothing they can do about it until I have the baby.  It hurts like heck and gives me such horrible sinus headaches!

  • I did when I was 16 or 17 - mine were impacted so it was surgery and I was put under. I felt pretty crummy afterwards but I have a low-threshold for pain with that kind of thing. And I dont come off of painkillers well. But it was fine overall and the main thing I remember is feeling crummy from the painkillers not so much the actual pain so I guess thats good ;)

  • I only got one of mine out - I have the other 3 in my mouth as there was space for them to come in and they came in straight.

the one I had out came in crooked so out it came. if oyu have a tooth above the gumline its NO BIG DEAL to get it out :) so don't worry about having them out if they are coming in. I can't speak to the once that have to be surgically removed - I think it depends on a lot of factors!

    Good luck!
  • I hadd 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted last Friday (so a little over a week ago).  I chose to use the IV sedation (honestly the best thing since sliced bread!!!) and have had ZERO problems.  No pain, no infection, VERY litle discomfort - nothing some tylenol won't take care of.  It couldn't have been any better.  I was eating soft (solid) food that night and by Sunday I was pretty much eating whatever I wanted - but carefully.

I was a nervous wreck and put it off for years because I was so terrified - honestly nothing to be afraid of.  The only thing you'll feel is the IV being put in (and I didn't even feel that!)  Next thing I knew I was awake and the Dr. told me we were done.  My appt was for 10 and I was home by 11:15.

My oral surgeon is in Stratford - awesome, awesome, awesome guy and awesome staff.  Dr. Pagar - highly reccomend him if you're remotely in the area.

Let me know if you have any other questions - I swear it's a breeze!!!
  • it really depends on your individual situation, but mine weren't terrible at all.  i had conscious sedation, so i was awake but totally unbothered by the whole process.  it was done in an oral surgeon's office.  had the procedure on a thursday morning, was on percocet until friday evening, went back to work on saturday.

i would just say to be very careful with what you eat afterwards... keep it soft and mild, and keep eating soft/bland foods for longer than you think you need to.  you don't want dry sockets, they are very, very painful.

  • Umm. Yes, I've had 6 wisdom teeth removed. Umm. Yes- 2 came back (i'm like a shark or something!) It wasn't bad at all- 2 of mine were impacted too.
  • I had all mine out while I was in High School and all four were impacted.  It wasn't too bad.  The novicane was the most painful part.  They also had this clamp in my mouth to keep it open and I have a really tiny mouth so that was very uncomfortable.  The rest wasn't bad.  You'll get painkillers (like codine) for after wards.  Melany, you've been through labor...I'm sure this will be a piece of cake.  :-)
  • I had mine out about 5 years ago.  2 of mine were impacted too.  The procedure itself was fine and recovery was not so bad, except I wound up with an infection so I was out of work for an entire week.  They do give you great pain meds though :)
  • obviously it's totally different for everyone, so I don't want to scare you but I'll fill you in on my not-so-great experience.

I had three removed (the fourth never formed or came in).  Everything went smoothly.  I had the teeth extracted on Friday morning and was put on oxycotin for the pain.  The drugs made me sick, so I had to eat a little bit of oatmeal before every dose (every 6 hours), which put my on the couch at 3am trying to get down some oatmeal so I could take my meds.  I have never had a cavity or anything other than cleanings done to my teeth so this was a huge thing for me.  On Monday, I called the office in tears becaue I was out of meds and the rigth side of my face hurt so bad I couldn't sleep.  They called me into the office saying I shouldn't still be in that much pain.  It ended up being a really big dry socket, so they packed it with some gauze soaked in anitiseptic (that hurt like hell, I almost passed out they had to strap the oxygen on me!), but in less than 15 mins. the pain was gone.  A few days went by and I had to return to have my stitches removed- no big deal at all and then they repacked the socket since I was still taking over the counter pain meds every 6 hours.  The second packing stayed in for a few more days, and then things healed very nicely.

The dry socket caused the most intense pain I've ever been in...I'm hoping labor isn't that bad, but we'll see! :)  Good luck, I hope things work out better for you!
  • It's not that bad - really!!!!
  • I had mine surgically removed in 7th grade.  It wasn't that bad, I ate soft foods for about a week.  Mine did get infected and that was not fun at all.

My sister was eatting the same night after having hers removed and my brother's girlfriend was eatting the next day.
