TTC question

DH and I are totally ready to start a family. We keep going back and forth on when to start. I am a teacher and think I should take the school year into consideration when TTC. In my perfect world I would be able to slide from maternity leave right into summer vacation. However, it is my greatest fear that we won't be able to get pregnant right away or at all. And I really don't want to wait until July to start TTC. From the standpoint of being a teacher, am I being selfish if we start now instead of waiting until this summer (on the off chance we get pregnant pretty quickly)?

Re: TTC question

  • I think while its totally up to you, you may not want to put yourself under so much pressure to conceive in any particular month.  That being said, I don't think its selfish to start now or too ambitious to wait til summer.

    Good luck TTC!

  • IMO - if you're ready to start, you should start.  Even if you did take the school year into consideration - there are no guarantees that you'll get pg and be able to time it right anyway.  I don't think it's selfish at all.
  • Because you can't control when you get pregnant, I would start now. If you're meant to get pregnant right away, then so be it. You'll figure it all out. ;-)

I know what you mean, though, about wanting to time it just right because you're a teacher. You're ideal time to get pregnant would probably be September/October because then you'd be due in June/July. You never know what TTC might bring you. You may regret not TTC right away or you may get pregnant right away. There's definitely know way to plan!

    Good luck!

  • I am also a teacher and when we decided to ttc I wanted to take the school year into consideration.  I knew that we couldn't plan when it would happen but like you said in a perfect world I wanted to have the baby and then summer break.  We began ttc in July and we were so fortunate to get pg on the first try.  I had Lucas on April 26 and took the rest of the school year off and returned to work in September.  It worked out perfectly!   You need to do what is best for you and your dh.....I don't think you would be selfish at all, if you want to ttc now then you should.  Best of luck to you and dh!!
  • I don't think it is selfish at all.  I completely understand being frustrated with the unknown. DH and I are waiting a few more months to TTC b/c we want to TRY to time having a baby with the last few months of our stint in Australia so his family can meet him/her.  That being said, there are no guarantees and I completely share your fear that we will have trouble and kick ourselves for waiting.  Ultimately I think you just need to do what is best for you with the mentality that if you start trying there is a possibility that you'll be successful right away and that way you're prepared for anything.  HTH, and GL!!!
  • If I were in your shoes I would wait to try for an April baby since it would be the most ideal for my schedule. But the other side of me would want to start trying right away in case it takes awhile.  you never know.... i thought it was going to take awhile, but 9 months later a little boy was in our arms....
  • I hear you on wanting to time things.  I'm facing a similar situation.  I started TTC in January, though timing wasn't great (EDD would be early October).  Last month would have been great (EDD would be mid November, so my maternity leave would run into my winter break).  Unfortunately, no luck (chemical pg) last month.  If I'm pg this cycle, my EDD would be 12/15 or so, so the first part of maternity would be my winter break; timing is still great (was also when DD was born and worked out well).  But you know what?  Third cycle may not be the charm.  In which case I may take a couple months off to aim for summer break.  But what if it doesn't happen then???

Good luck w/ whatever you decide.  Baby dust!

  • I totally understand your dilemma.  I am a teacher and I originally wanted to plan the perfect timing.  DH and I are both totally bitten by the baby bug so we decided that family comes first and we should start trying based on our life not on the school schedule.  It might end up at the right time though because we've been trying for four months now without any luck.  I am the biggest planner in the world so it is so hard for me to not be able to control this.... If you guys are ready you should start trying because you never know how long it will take you.  Especially since you are only 3 months ahead of the plan.  Image if you got pg now and had a Jan baby or start in July and didn't get pregnant for a few months and wound up with a Sept. baby.  Anything could happen either way, but I think if you're trying to schedule somewhat it's better to try for a winter/spring baby than wait until it turns into a spring/summer baby.
    Good luck either way!
  • I am also a teacher and had a January baby.  We tried for a year before we got pg too.  In an ideal world, I wanted a spring baby so that I could have my leave go into the summer, however, it didn't happen that way.

I took off 4 months and will be returning at the end of the month.  I will go back for 7 weeks and then be off for the summer.

You might want to decide the minimum/maximum amount of time you will be planning to take off if you were to have a baby any other time of year.  It might help you to plan for the "what if".  For instance, if you ended up having a June or July baby will taking only the summer off be enough for you?  Would you want to miss the beginning of the school year?

Lots of luck to you!  I hope you get pg quickly!
