Visiting LA...what do you know about these areas?

Hey ladies. DH and I are taking a trip out west this August and will be staying in LA for 3 days. I have looked up some condos/apts for rent for the 3 days, instead of a hotel. I have found several, however, I am a little unsure about their location. Im hoping some of you can let me know if these are okay areas for visitors (safe, etc.) We will have a rental car, so we arent too concerned about being in the center of all the attractions, but also dont want to be tooooo far away. I also included a link to a map of the location to give you a better idea. I appreciate the help and insight!!

The areas of interest are:

3600 Barham Boulevard (in between Burbank and Hollywood) http://tinyurl.com/djusn9

533 St. Andrews Place http://tinyurl.com/c7b4ny

On 5th St b/t Broadway and Hill. http://tinyurl.com/dnc5cp

Re: Visiting LA...what do you know about these areas?

  • Hi there! First may I suggest to find out more info on parking for your rental car. While I'm not familiary with all 3 of your locations, I do know that they are in areas where street/free parking may be limited. Permits may be required for parking, or if there is underground or a parking lot, you may need a remote to enter.

I know the Barham area fairly well. South of that point there are a lot of great restaurants & bars. North of there you should find a grocery store, in case you are inclined to stock your in-house fridge, etc. This location is extremely close to Universal Studios and City Walk.  This location is a short distance from Hollywood, off the 101 freeway at Highland is the Kodak Theatre and the Mann Chinese.

I guess that the St. Andrews address is in Hollywood.  I'm not as familiar with this location.  But it's close to the Melrose strip of shops, studios, and even closer to down town LA.

5th Street is in downtown.  If you headed south to Disneyland, this would be the closest.  My DH works downtown...I'll ask him if he is familiar with this end of town.

    Good luck!  Have Fun!

  • Why are you looking at condos vs. apartment? Is is that much cheaper?

The only one I would consider is on Barham - is it the corporate apartments you are looking at?

  •  Thank you so much for your help. All of these places have some type of designated parking spot or covered parking. Thats one thing I wanted to be sure of. I started looking at vrbo.com (vacation rentals by owner) when my sister found a condo to rent for her family to stay at in Florida. It seemed to be homier than a typical hotel, so I thought to look and see what I could find. Some of these options are less expensive than the local hotels (or the same price). They are all fully furnished and modern with balcony space and views.  And, as the icing on the cake, these units have their own washer and dryer (not coin operated) which is a plus b/c for a 2 week vacation out west, DH and I will defintely need to do some laundry!

**AlisaS: Im not sure if they corporate apts. The space is at Oakwood Toluca Hills...whatever that means!

  • i would avoid the st andrews place. also downtown is pretty dead after dark.  i mean, aside from all the homeless people. stick to barham and you'll be convenient to ventura blvd in the valley which is filled with shopping, restaurants, and quick access to the 101.  and you can also get to hollywood really quickly.  have fun!
  • Sounds like everyone has something good to say about Barham! Thank you so much for the help!
  • Oakwood is corporate rentals....short/long term.

  • I've never stayed at Oakwood apts, but they are corporate and hence continuously maintained and updated. Have a great time. Be sure to visit the board for any other recommendations: restaurants, night life, etc. We'll try to help as best we can!

I disagree about downtown. It's overwhelming how much downtown nightlife has changed. It's a great central location and I would recommend it. I would also recommend a hotel instead of condo. Three days isn't a very long trip and the hotels aren't too expensive.

  • The Oakwood is fine and very safe. That particular one is well-known for child wanna-be actors staying/living there as it is close to the studios. No view, though.

But how much are you paying? You might be able to find a hotel for cheaper than the Oakwood and get your clothes done at a laundry-mat in an hour.

  • I am very familiar with the 5th and Hill area. I walk it everyday.  That is considered the Historic Core District of Downtown Los Angeles. There are some new lofts there.  Although the area has been cleaned up (they have relocated the homeless) it still is pretty questionable in the early mornings.  5th and Broadway has an alley nearby that they call "cocaine alley" HTH.
  • I also meant to say evenings as well.
