NJ/Philly tax issue

My accountant should be calling me back tomorrow, but in the mean time, does anyone know the answer to this scenario:

I live in NJ, work in Philly. I just noticed that since starting my job in July, city wage hasn't been deducted from my pay check and therefore wasn't on my W-2. I know that NJ and Philly have a reciprocal agreement that if you pay city wage, you don't have to pay a full percentage of NJ... BUT... does it work the other way around - pay full NJ, but no city wage?

I'm gonna be pissed at my pay roll dept. if they've been effing this up!

Re: NJ/Philly tax issue

  • I'm not really sure, but we just got our state refund back and they said that we messed up our return so it was less than we anticipated.  If it's not on your paycheck, I wouldn't mess with it.

This is my first year working in Philly and living in NJ and I wasn't there all of 2008, so my situation was a little different.

Sorry I wasn't really of much help!

  • My H works in Philly and we live in NJ and we noticed that they were taking full Philly wage tax out of his paycheck and full NJ tax out of his paycheck so we actually got back a lot from our NJ return because of this mistake. H had to change his information with the payroll department so they only take one state of taxes out. As for your issue I would think that if you didn't pay  Philly wage tax but did pay taxes for NJ it would almost even out. I am not positive though. Sorry.
