AW: Just booked our trip to Southeast Asia!!

We're leaving in a month to go to Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. I can't wait! And I'm psyched that despite our last-minute planning we were able to use our frequent flyer miles for free flights. We're spending about 4 nights at a beach resort in Thailand and then backpacking from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City.

Has anyone been to this region? Any recommendations?

Re: AW: Just booked our trip to Southeast Asia!!

  • My cousins both decided to quit their jobs (they're 29 and 25...not sure that was the smartest idea) and head to SE Asia for a few months.  One is in Thailand right now working at a beach resort that his friend owns.  The other one is in Cambodia touring around.   She has a blog, if you'd like to read it.  Might give you ideas of what to do.

They're not the most touristy people, though -- they tend to veer off the beaten path.  They like to get to know the locals.

Let me know if you want to read her blog, I can look up the address for you.

  • I'd love to read the blog. Can you post the address? Also, any idea which resort your other cousin works at, or which island?
  • Wow! Exciting, Congrats.
  • If you email me at meghanmj@gmail.com, I'll send you the link.   Not sure how she'd feel if I posted her blog to everybody -- even though I know they're pretty public.

  • That's awesome! My FIL and other extended family are all in Thailand. When my husband visited last he said the same as the above poster - hated the city, Bangkok was a mess of people, but he loved the country. You can just go ride an elephant... He also loved the meals that you get by just dropping by someone's house. I would think you'd need to be with someone native to do that, but I'm no expert! Sounds like an awesome trip!
  • Wow, sounds like a great time!
  • congrats on booking your trip! I'm always excited to hear about columbus residents interested in visiting other parts of the world, since (in my experience) there's few and far between. enjoy trip planning!
  • oh and definitely post your questions on the travel boards since i doubt you'll get much advice on here. gluck again!
  • That sounds like an awesome trip!
  • That sounds amazing!
  • Sounds exciting.  Have a great time!  (No recs from here though)
  • I've been to Vietnam & we spent about 5 nights in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City).  It's a beautiful city!  Don't miss the zoo and the water puppet show if you want some local culture.  I planned the trip for a group of Vietnam Vets and we went to  their 'the Palace' ...was interesting twist on the war!
Make sure to go by the old US Embassy...it sure is nothing like I thought!    Where are you staying in Saigon?  Email me and I'll help all I can!
I'd love to go back!  Think I'd fit in your suitcase..hehe!
