neti pot?

Anyone use a neti pot?or "nose bidet"?  My dentist suggested it to me last night.  I went into the dentist office to make sure nothing was wrong with my tooth.  It's been hurting since Monday and after asking all kinds of questions and taking a look, he thought it might be because of my sinuses.  I have had an on-going cold for almost 2 weeks now.  Apparently it's all connected...root of tooth - sinus - congestion.  Anyway, I remember seeing/hearing about it from Dr. Oz on Oprah.  Here are a couple links.  Just wondering if anyone had any experience with it.

Re: neti pot?

  • Sorry, I don't know why that came out all funky...
  • Yes, I use one every time I'm sick.  It's the best thing ever.  The salt water flushes out all the bad bacteria in your sinuses and you will get over any cold or sinus infection quickly.  It feels really weird at first but you'll get used to it!
  • Thanks Julie!  The dentist suggested sea salt water.  Is it just half-and-half salt and water?
  • Yup, I have one.  As Julie said, it's great when you're sick and they can really help people with allergies.  Once you get over the giggles of pouring salt water up your nose, you'll get used to it.  You can find them at lots of natural foods stores.  I think I got mine at Whole Foods.

  • I've used it plenty of times and think it works pretty well.  Weird at first, but neat after you get over it :)
  • Never used one -- but my doctor suggested this and its worked miracles for me (I have chronic sinusitis in one of my sinuses):

  • I have one and I love it!  It does wonders when my indoor allergies are acting up or when I'm sick.  I ordered one from Health and yoga online, but I know you can find them many diffrent places including at most CVS stores.

It doesn't take long to get the hang of or get used to but the sensation of pouring saline water up your nose is a bit strange at first.
  • i havent but i've heard a lot about it. does it make you feel like you're drowning? cause that would freak me out too much :(
  • I use one twice a day every day.  I have the sinucleanse system which you can get at any drugstore (I think I got mine at CVS).   I have terrible indoor nasal allergies and this has helped immensely!  It does take some getting used to - I sorta felt like I was drowning intially - but once I got used to it, it's fast and easy and the benefits are a thousandfold.  Oh, I get the sinucleanse refill packets at drugstore.com because they're cheaper there.
  • I was told to make the salt water about the same salinity as your body so it doesn't sting. If you use too much salt it will sting and irritate your nose/sinuses not help like it's supposed to.

I use about 1tsp of salt in about 450ml of water.  A few tips from using mine.

    1. pour a little out the spout after mixing the salt in. What's in the nozzle wont' have enough salt and will sting and not be so pleasant

    2. use water that's body tempeature/ lukewarm it's much more comfortable this way

    3. breath through your mouth and don't try to swallow while you are using the NETI.

    4. use salt with out iodine avoid other addatives if possible as well. I have a no addative kosher salt that works for me.

You don't feel like you are downing at all, you just keep breathing through your mouth and no water is going down your throat so while it feels strange definately not drowning unable to breath like.

Hope this helps people who are thinking about trying it.

  • I used one with a really bad cold this winter.  I bought it at CVS.  It was really cool and helped me a lot.  I am really into 'all natural' fixes, as natural as putting water up your nose can be.
But, just make sure the water is a comfy temp for you and that you have a towel to wipe your face ready.
And, you will feel it in every part of your face :)
  • i went over a clinical trial analyzing the effectiveness of using a nasal saline rinse in addition to traditional allergy/cold therapy vs. traditional therapy alone in pediatrics and supposedly using a nasal saline rinse (aka neti-stop) statistically improved overall symptoms and deceases the recurrence of symptoms. how applicable these results are especially since they didn't compare the effectiveness of a saline rinse by itself vs. saline+traditional or vs traditional ... not sure. but i have 3 pots and continue to use it w/ pretty good benefits for seasonal allergies.
