places to get dog microchipped?

First, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who responded to my earlier post!  I never thought about microchipping Lilly--it's a great idea!  Does anybody know where I can get it done?

Re: places to get dog microchipped?

  • We had ours done at the Vet's office.  It's just like giving them a shot - a little poke and a rice-like chip is inserted with a number that has all of our information assigned to it.  I would definitely do it again if we get another dog.
  • Most Vets do it. Ginger is microchipped, and if we got another dog, it would be microchipped too. Like Steph said, it is inserted by shot.
  • Just an FYI.  It may be worth doing a bit of research.  Our dog was microchiped by the rescue we adopted him from -- and then we when took him to the vet -- the vet couldn't detect the microchip.  Apparently, scanners are pretty brand specific and only pick up chips of that brand.  Accordingly, it may be worth trying to find the brand most commonly used.  I don't know what it is though.  However, we didn't want to get our dog re-chiped -- so he has what he has.
  • We have the Home Again microchip. She has had it for 5 years.

  • Our vet did ours too.
  • I think Home Again is the most popular/often used company. It's kind of confusing - they've changed their programs in the last several years - now it's a fee to have it done and register the dog, but you also get to do an online profile page with lots of personal info about the dog, including a photo. With a $15/annual fee (I think this is mandatory now - it used to be optional) you get lots of other services too. I think most vets do chipping.
