I was sitting on the couch reading the paper, when I see all these cars stopped out on the street, honking their horns. I looked closer and saw a little dog in the middle of the road. Having had to experience my neighbor's dog dying in this very way a few months back, I ran out to help (in my pj's - hehe). I called the dog over and he came right away. It was then that I could see that he was at least a mix of pit bull (& beagle?), but he was so sweet and little that I brought him into the house. He was so spazzy and playful, running all around until I contained him in the cat room. The cats had escaped upstairs, so DH closed the upstairs door to keep him down here, and played with him while I looked up his tag information online.
We called the supposed owners with no answer and drove out there, but no one was home. Then we drove to the Delaware Humane Society, who directed us to the Delaware Dog Pound. We got there and we did NOT feel comfortable leaving him there. It was not open (had drop-off cages), pretty cold outside, and he was scared. So we drove back to the "owners" house. Someone was there that time and denied ownership (though the phone # was right for the address).
We considered taking him home (despite having no where to put him, 2 freaked out cats, and a DH with allergies), but since we knew we were out of leads on finding the owners anyway, we decided to go back to the Pound. We were both really upset to leave him there in the cage, but then the dog warden drove up. He told us he'd take him inside and make sure he was nice and settled, which completely eased our minds. He'll be there for 3 days while they try to find the owner, and then be taken to the Humane Society to be adopted.
The whole time we were driving around, he was whining and jumping around. He had to have someone sitting and cuddling with him, and even still was very freaked out. DH and I were so rattled and exhausted after a full hour in the car with him! I think this just added a few years to the amount of time it will take me to convince DH to get a dog - LOL
Re: Our LONG dog rescue ordeal...
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that his owners denied him, just that it was fishy that the address and phone matched to someone that is not the owner. The dog was super-friendly and didn't seem at all excited about the guy at the door. So, he was not the owner, but perhaps knows the owner? I don't know.
DH is super-itchy (and Bella is still hiding), but we both keep saying we miss the cute little guy. But NO, with a baby on the way, DH's allergies, crazy cats.... no dog for us. Someday we'll get a less-spazzy, longer-coated dog --- somehow longer fur does not trigger his allergies.
That's so tough having to drop him off. The last dog I rescued from getting hit in the street, I almost wished I had taken him to the Humane Society. Cause once I located the owner and drove him over, they yelled at the dog and drug him inside, without so much a "thank you" for returning him.
Gotta love how some people treat animals.
