Dog Allergies

Does anyone have them? If so what do you do to help you have a dog?

We got a new puppy and now all this week Mickey has been making my husband wheez. We just bought AllerpetD and are waiting for it to arrive. Has anyone used it? Does it work?

We've come up with some ideas and they're starting to work a little. Just wondering if you guys have any more?

Re: Dog Allergies

  • Sorry to hear that your H is reacting to your new puppy!!

What kind of breed is he?  Is it possible to keep him shaved (the dog of course)  Stick out tongue

DH is allergic to all sorts of things... environmental/pollens/grass/etc. and his allergy tests even show that he's allergic to nuts/shellfish/dogs... but he eats nuts daily and shellfish A LOT and has never had a reaction to them.  But our dog... she's a shitzu/poodle mix, which are not your typical "shedders" and are said to be hypoallergenic... but occasionally DH will have the runny nose and sneezing b/c of her.  It's not often and it really helps if we keep her hair really short.  Also, we vaccuum the carpet and the sofas and dust a few times a week.

Hope you guys can find a good solution!

  • We think he's a Jack Russell Terrier but his mixed but we have no idea with what. If Mickey is calm he's fine but once he gets hyper and running around he gets to where he's wheezing and having shortness of breath. We purchased a vaccumm with a HEPA filter and our bedroom and is doggy free and he feels fine in there. Hopefully AllerpetD works a miracle if not he'll have to be in our screened porch rather than inside...

He doesn't have a lot of hair. I'll try to post a pic.

  • Claritin.  I am allergic to dogs and I just deal with it...I forgot what it is like to breathe.  (I have two golden retrievers.)  But Brian is allergic to something (dogs or cats, maybe) and when he gets really bad he uses Claritin.

And please don't make your dog live somewhere other than inside the house.  If your husband gets really bad and can't live with the dog, you might have to find him a new home.  Sad  (The dog, not your husband...well, maybe that all depends.  LOL)  I hope it all works out for you.

  • I discovered a few years ago that I'm allergic to cats and dog. But I've had both nearly my whole life. No dogs at the moment, but I'm around them alot. I take Zytec daily.?

    ?

I'm supposed to get allergy shots, but without insurance you make sacrifices.

    ?

Doc also recommended taking Singular and Nasonex daily with the Zyrtec. Again - if I had insurance, I would. ?

  • Thanks guys we'll look into those.

Did you ever wheeze or get short of breath or just the sniffles and sneezes???

I'm sure it'll work out. We're committed to make it work. :-) Thanks for all the advice.

  • I am allergic to both my dog and my 2 cats. I take an antihistamine daily and have almost my entire life. It helps pretty well. Another thing that helps me is we have leather furniture that does not hold any pet dander (easy to wipe right down). Also, we pulled up all of the carpet in the house and now have tile and laminate flooring throughout the whole house. I vacuum it once weekly with a bare floor vacuum and in between I give the living room a quick vacuum mid-week because this is where our pets hang out the most and this honestly helps me tremendously because the carpets were always full of fur no matter how nice of a vacuum we had.

  • My DH started wheezing a lot from allergies when we got our 2nd cat. It was really scary seeing him having trouble breathing.  His doctor put him on an inhaler that's used for asthma and it really helps.
  • I am/was allergic to my dog too. I don't let it bother me. I had a chronic sinus infection for about the first 6 months we had her. I took Claratin and learned to keep my carpet vacuumed a few times a week. Now we have mostly tile and I run the shark on it about every other day, It is so gross to see what carpet hides.

I almost feel like I have grown an immunity to my dog. When she is freshly bathed I itch but for the most part she doesn't bother me anymore. I don't take any meds and haven't had symtoms in well over a year(knock on wood)

  • I'm not an expert on pet allergies, since thankfully my husband and I don't have them, but I did want to mention that pollen counts for tree pollen are very high right now. I don't know if your husband has any pollen allergies, but if he does, the pollen plus the new puppy might be a double-whammy on his system right now. I know that doesn't help him for the time being, but it might give him a little hope that things might get better when the pollen clears up.

Good luck with everything! Hopefully his doctor can give him something that will make him more comfortable.

  • Ditto everyone else on getting rid of carpet. Not sure if that is an option for you - but if it's not, invest in a good quality vacumn and prepare to keep it clean several times a week.?

    ?

Wash/clean all areas the pets are in and don't forget to clean/change your air filter for the AC. ?
