Cat owners, wwyd?

So Maddie is home and hiding like crazy.  We've let her hide for the last 24 hrs.  The first night, we made her sit with us and she slept in my bed for the most part.  She has discovered that my box spring has a hole, which she can then climb up into...so that has been a challenge.  Currently, she is under the sofa.

So, I have to work tonight (6-11).  She hasn't used her litter box yet (or carpet, or floor).  And she has only eaten some tuna we have given her.

Should I put her in the bathroom with her litter box and food, close the door, when I am gone tonight?  Maybe she'll GO and eat and stuff?  She seems to like enclosed places.  (I mean, she lived in a cage for the last 6 months)

I feel like she is Brooks from Shawshank Redemption.

Re: Cat owners, wwyd?

  • Hum, well what I did when I got Boomer home, was just let him hide. Eventually he got hungry and came out. I would just put her bowl where it normally would be, place the litter box where it would normally be and let her sniff out her new home. It may take her a week or two to get adjusted and that's perfectly normal.
  • Atticus was a kitten when we brought him home, but we started him out in just one (fairly large) room -- he had his litter box, toys, and food and water. Then we gradually let him get used to the rest of the house. I think either way would really work fine, though -- leaving her free while you're gone or giving her a more enclosed space. She just needs to adjust (exactly like Brooks!).

  • I had to put mine in the bathroom the same way you did. He was fine when I got home and he had used the box and ate. Don't worry about anything cats do EVERYTHING on their own time!  ;)

  • Ditto the other girls, Kristy! Just give Miss Kitty some time and she'll come out of hiding. My fat boy Pancake did the same thing for awhile! And he LOVED climbing up into the box spring and sleeping! It was like a hammock! LOL!
