TX nestie needs some help...

Hi Ladies, MH and I will be headed to Columbus at the end of April. We will be going for MHs job and I will be tagging along for the week. I am needing things to do...
We were also thinking about staying an extra weekend to explore. Please, let me know the must sees & dos.
We are staying at the Westin and I don't mind taking taxis and doing things alone...I also like to shop!
Thanks a bunch!
Amy

Re: TX nestie needs some help...

  • German Village is a nice place to go and hang around.  There's not much in the way of shopping close to the Westin, but the Short North is pretty close (lots of galleries, etc.), South Campus Gateway on OSU's campus, and lots of malls in the suburbs (Easton Town Center, Mall at Tuttle Crossing, Polaris Fashion Place, etc.).

Definitely go to one of the Cameron Mitchell restaurants - Marcella's is a new one in the Short North, check out the North Market, walk German Village, and take a taxi out to one of the malls for some shopping.

  • For night life, there are a lot of places close together on Park Street in the Arena District, which is just north of downtown.
For interesting food shopping (great lunches) I enjoy the North Market, they also have some neat handmade things.  The short North, where the North Market is, has lots of art stores for shoppings.

Malls are big around here, Polaris Mall is indoor and has some pricer items for the area.  Easton is also a shopping center, but it has an open town square feel to it.  Gameworks is there, and if you go during the day, you can get a card that is 2 hours of play for $20.  City Center Mall is across the street from the Westin, but it has very little in the area of shopping.
I like our art museum, Columbus Museum of Art, and COSI (Science museum) can sometimes be fun.  There is a history of $ exhibit right now at the Ohio Historical Society.

  • If the weather is nice and you are into the outdoors you can always check out some of the local parks. Whetstone (in Clintonville... North of Campus off of High Street) is a great park on the river. Highbanks is another great park with trails to explore.

Grandview is a great area to poke around (Grandview Ave. to start), The Short North, German Village/Brewery District,... all very cute areas to walk around.

If you are into museums/art/exploring things.. I would look into visiting COSI (Center of Science and Industry)... many parents take kids there... but its fun for adults too. There are museums in the city as well and TONS of art galleries, especially in the Short North.

Easton is a great outdoor mall - easy to walk and decent restaurants to relax.

The Columbus Zoo is also fun (Northwest side of the city on the Scioto River)

If you have never been to OSU some people like checking out the campus ... easy to walk around and near downtown.

If you can rent a bike somewhere (not sure where you might do that... you could ask the Westin)... you can ride your bike on a path that runs from downtown all about 14 miles north along the river. You can explore many different city neighborhoods that way and have a leisurely, pretty ride.

    Have fun.
  • There are some cute boutiques in the Short North. I haven't written reviews of them yet, but they are worth checking out. Here is a small list of places I like to shop in Columbus that I have reviewed:

Also here is a list of bars in Columbus:

as for restaurants, I recommend Barcelona...it's my favorite restaurant in Columbus and is located in German Village which wouldn't be too far of a cab ride from the Westin.  The Columbus Museum of Art is really nice and if it is nice out, Goodale Park and/or Schiller Park are nice areas to walk around.

I really recommend checking out reviews of places, restaurants, bars, etc at http://www.yelp.com/columbus-oh

  • Franklin Park Conservatory is nice too.
  • Also, make sure you drop by Pistacia Vera on Third Street (close to 3rd and Beck) and try a mini tart.  It's within walking distance from Barcelona, and if it's nice, you can do dessert and coffee there and walk back to the Westin.
  • Thanks a bunch!
I may have more ?s as the trip gets closer.
    Thanks again!
