onion question

I hate onions, so I apologize for another stupid food question for the week.

Are green onions, the long thin, round green onions?  I thought those were chives?  My recipe for spinach dip calls for 3 green onions, chopped.

Re: onion question

  • I actually have no idea what (whole) chives look like, but what you're talking about are green onions :)  I think they're also called scallions...maybe :)
  • Chives are an herb, it's long and green and round too but are much much skinnier than green onions.  Green onions are also sometimes called scallions.
  • Chives do kind of look like smaller, much skinnier versions of the green part of green onions/scallions.  They spread like the devil if you plant them in your garden instead of a pot!

I usually find that using kitchen scissors to chop green onions is just as easy as a knife, especially when you get to the green part, which can be kind of flimsy and harder to slice completely through with knives on the first pass.

  • How bad do you think a spinach dip would taste without them?  I hate those kind of onions the most..lol
  • Shanna - I always skip the scallions for my spinach dip. I don't care for them and I don't think it affects the yumminess.
