f/u to thyroid post from yesterday

So, my blood work came back this morning. My TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) and T4 levels were tested. My TSH is "off the charts" and my thyroid is grossly enlarged, according to my OB. Normal range is 0.3-5 - mine was 177. eek. My OB is shocked and amazed that I'm not showing more symptoms (depression, extreme fatigue, etc.). But like I said to her, what would I compare these symtpoms to...I have a new baby!!! Of course I'm dead tired, weepy, etc. Plus, I'm weaning and I know my hormones are all over the place. ugh...  Also, my T4 is slightly low. Normal range is 0.7-1.9 and mine is 0.2. In my brief scan of the web, it sounds as if this may be hypothyroidism and there's a chance it could be a side effect of childbirth. There's actually a postpartum thyrodism condition. Go figure. Anywho, my family Dr. will run some tests on Friday to see what the heck is going on. If anyone has any insight to share, I'm interested. TIA! :)

Re: f/u to thyroid post from yesterday

  • Yuck Kelly!  GL on Friday!!!  *hugs*
  • I'm glad your OB noticed the enlargement before it got much worse! But you're right...how would you know if you had symptoms since you have a brand new baby! Good luck figuring out what to do. Wonder if this is something that will go away on its own if it's a childbirth side effect?
  • ((HUGS))  I'm so glad they've got it figured out--now just time to fix it!!!
  • Sorry to hear your test results weren't great.  Hopefully, this will just be temporary and maybe you're numbers will return to normal soon.  I know mine fluctuate.

The good news is the fix is rather easy -- take a cheap pill every day and monitor your symptoms.

I think I mentioned that my sister was born without a thyroid gland so she has cogential hypothyroidism.  It hasn't really effected her life at all.  She is still able to do everything without limitations.

You should post this over on the Health and Fitness board because there are a lot of girls with hypothyroidism over there and they may be helpful.
