rug for nursery

I have a 8x10 rug that I have had for awhile and it would work great in the baby's room. However it needs cleaned. I could rent a rug doctor but both sides need to be cleaned and I don't know how good of a job that would do. Especially with a little one scooting around on it.

So should I get it cleaned? I bought the rug from Crate and Barrel outlet for maybe $150 and it's going to be $100 to get it cleaned. Should I clean it or get a new one? Rugs are freakin' expensive!

Thanks ladies!

Re: rug for nursery

  • Rugs are expensive. I would simply look around and see if you can find a new rug for under a $100 dollars that you like.  There are many places that can offer you a good deal. If it's around $100 I would go ahead and purchase new, if not I would have the other one cleaned.

Also if you really wanted to I think you can run a rug doctor on both sides of a rug with out harming anything.  Just do the back first and then the front.
  • What kind of rug is it? For that much you could buy a shampooer and clean it yourself?!? Just a thought. Then if you have carpets you can clean them whenever you want. But I don't know how well the bottom of the rug would be cleaned with a shampooer?

Here is the rug pictured in a different room.
The rug doctor would be $60 to rent and I could do one side and then the other side.  We dont have any other carpet in the house.
Or we could take it to a dry cleaner and they have told me that it would be $100.
  • We have a steam carpet cleaner and it leaves things pretty wet.  I think you'd have a hard time cleaning a rug that big -- there would be water everywhere (and twice if you have to do both sides).  I'd scratch the do-it-yourself option as not being worth the $40 (and time) that you'd save.

That being said, if you *love* the rug, then I would get it dry cleaned.  If not, I would look for a new one.
  • I would rent a rug doctor. It is hard for me to find rugs that I like and they are super expensive. But then again an extra $40 bucks and you could have someone else clean it. Either way I would probably have it cleaned because it is such a pain to find the perfect rug.

  • Rent a rug doctor, but make sure to clean the rug somewhere the water won't hurt, clean one side and let it dry and then clean the other side and let it dry.

  • Since it's a rug that could probably be replaced fairly easily, I'd get a new one...if it were me making the decision. Also, the fring around the edges may be a concern? By the time your baby is sitting up or rolling around on the floor he/she is also going to be putting EVERYTHING into his/her mouth. Maisie is always reaching for an afghan that we have on our couch with fring on the edges. It freaks me out. Just a thought. That could be the paranoid first-time-mommy in me. :)
