Book suggestions please

Hey Ladies
I am hosting my first book club with some close girlfriends from high school and I need some book suggestions. Some of the girls are not big readers, so I need something that will keep them both interested and something that is a fast read. Im reading No Country for Old Men right now, but it's a little heavy. Any suggestions for something light and uplifting would be great! TIA :)

Re: Book suggestions please

  • i highly recommend any of the shopaholic books by sophia kinsella..they are fun...

i am actually in a book club, and the first book we read was the inspiration for our book club...it would be a fun read for your first book... angry housewives eating bon bons.  by Lorna Landvik.
good luck..it is fun, you will enjoy a book club!
  • Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. I found it to be a very quick read.

The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. Parts of it are a tad shocking, but overall a quick and interesting read. It's a memoir, although I admit I was very skeptical in certain spots.

Baby Proof by Emily Giffin. Very quick read although I pretty much hated the main character. Plus it wasn't totally what I was expecting from reading the back cover, so I was disappointed. I think there are some other books by her you could consider like Something Blue and Something Borrowed.

I have not read them but friends of mine love the Shopaholic books. I think eventually I'll get around to them.

HTH! I don't read many "light read" type of books...I seem to be more drawn to ones that are depressing!

  • I love the Secret Life of Bees!  It's fairly short & draws you in.  I also vote for Marley & Me.
  • I'm reading Eat Pray Love right now and it's pretty good, but I have a hard time relating to a lot of it.  I just never see myself feeling the need to go on a soul-searching safari across the globe.  But she is a great writer and there have been laugh out loud parts in it.

Marley & Me is a great read and very touching.  My mom flew right through it, and she doesn't really like to read.

Nicholas Sparks books are always girl friendly and quick reads, but they are always a bit sad too. Three Weeks With My Brother was fantastic! But I read it on vacation and cried through most of it.  So I wouldn't necessarily call it a light read.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. Marley and Me is a good idea, but I think most of the girls have already read it. I may choose Eat Pray Love, but I haven't decided yet :)
