Thyroid Issue Questions

Hi ladies. This morning, at my annual exam (ick) my OB discovered that my thyroid is enlarged, fairly significantly.  I have an apt. with my family Dr. on Friday to have it looked at. The only things my OB shared with me are that 1.) this is fairly common and 2.) could be a postpardum issue....she said they often see this in women who's given birth within the last 12 months. Anyone experience thyroid issues?  If so, what? What should I expect at my Dr.'s apt. on Friday?  I'm not freaked out yet....but just looking for info.  Thanks!!!!

Re: Thyroid Issue Questions

  • When I thought I had a thyroid problem (my grandmother does), they just did some bloodwork, so that's what I'd expect from your family dr., just to check your hormone levels.

That's about all I've got.  If you don't get any good info here about thyroid problems, I can ask my grandma about hers and what she does to treat it (I think she's on a med).

  • I have had thyroid issues for the last 4 years. In 2004, I noticed a nodule that was visible on my neck. So they tested it, and I had it removed..the nodule, and the left and frontal lobe of my thryoid. The right lobe was carrying all of the weight for me... until last November. So now I am taking levothyroxine 150mg a day. Did she find a nodule, a goiter, or was it enlarged? I honestly dont know to much about enlarged thyroid but the symptoms of thyroid trouble is fatigue, weight gain or trouble loosing weight. as well as a list of other symptoms. I think tiredness and weight troubles are the biggest signs. Just stay positive, worst case scenairo is that you will end up taking a pill. The pills are the cheap $4.00 pills you can get at any of the grocery pharmacies.
good luck and keep us informed!

  • I have had an enlarged thyroid since I was 18.  Mine had never caused any problems with my TSH levels (which is what your doctor will test you for) or otherwise.  They check my levels fairly regularly but that may also be because I have a family history of thyroid disease (my sister was actually born without a thyroid gland -- and my mom and maternal grandmother have thyroid disease).

Anyway, best of luck.  I'll keep my fingers crossed that its nothing.

Interesting fact:  If you live in Ohio or Michigan you are much, much more likely to have thyroid problems than if you lived anywhere else in the world.  Crazy, huh?
  • At my last annual, I still hadn't had a period (18 months PP), so they tested my thyroid.  The levels were high.  I was also still nursing.  They said that it was up to me if I wanted to treat or not (strange, I know).  I decided to wait until I had weaned to do anything about it.  Once I weaned, the levels went back to normal.  I really didn't want to start taking pills- once you start, you have to take them forever.
Are you still pumping?  Maybe that has something to do with it?
