Curly girls - stylist help please

Ok, I know there are some fellow curlies here and I need help.

I've been cutting my own hair because frankly, I have a bit of a phobia about getting my hair cut.  I really hate the whole process.  I dislike looking at myself in the mirror, I hate having someone wash my hair, I hate being around all the "pretty "people in the salon.  I know, I have issues.

Regardless, I've butchered my hair and I really need a professional now so I'm looking for a good, but somewhat "low-key" stylist?  I don't want someone who inisist on talking the whole time.  I hate that too.  Anyone have a good stylist that might fit the bill?  I'd prefer north end, but I'll travel anywhere for the right person.

Thanks girls.

Re: Curly girls - stylist help please

  • Hmmm, my sister has thick curly coarse hair down to her waist and she goes the the JCPenney salon in Polaris....I think. I will ask her in my next email to her. PS, she always looks beauti-gorgeous after getting her hair done there.
  • It sounds like Penzones wouldn't necessarily be your style, but I've had GREAT luck with Danica there (at the Grand Salon in Dublin).  I saw her once when I chopped my hair for Locks of Love, then went back to her this past December and I LOVED my haircut then.  She knew just what to do for my crazy curly, thick hair.  She's young, but not overly perky and I actually usually need to start the conversations if I feel like talking.

Now if you hair isn't crazy thick and coarse-ish, you might try a different place that I've been.  They didn't really believe me when I told them that I needed more gunk in my hair and are a little far from home, but otherwise they've been fantastic (I wouldn't have changed if they had offered free Locks of Love cuts!).  They actually did my hair for my wedding and were SO laid back and nice.  The place is called Gina's and is on Grandview Avenue right by Panera & Spagio.
  • I go to Judy Logan at Salon Lofts on Henderson Road. She's been my stylist for about 10 years and I've loved what she does for my hair. She's in a small "loft" so there are only 2 stylists there. She actually has naturally curly hair (one of the reasons I go to her) but straightens it most of the time.

She's not a huge "talker" but can carry on a conversation if you want. She normally charges me about $40 a haircut...which I think is kinda high for my cheapskate taste...but she does a nice job so I budget for it.
