Anyone take classes at a YMCA?

Man, I'm never going to get to Sonic if I don't stop posting. And yes, I get the irony of posting about fitness classes right after my fast food post. :)

I'm going to be starting a new job in a couple of weeks that's second shift (4-midnight), so I would have my mornings free. I don't want to join a gym for the exercise equipment because we have free weights and an elliptical at home, but I would kind of like to be able to take classes (like pilates and yoga and things like that). I'm looking at the YMCA's site and it seems like the program membership would be perfect. It's only $30/year and you can just take the classes (some do have an extra fee). Does anyone have a program membership (or a regular membership) to a Y and take classes there? Are they worthwhile? TIA!

Re: Anyone take classes at a YMCA?

  • I worked at the Gahanna Y for a little over 2 years, but I haven't been there in a couple of years, so take this info with a grain of salt...

The Program Membership is great unless you're talking about the aerobics classes.  You can't take aerobics classes if you only have a program membership.  If you're talking about Yoga or Pilates, water aerobics, or any other paid class, then the program membership would be beneficial.  But then the classes that you take are more expensive with that membership vs. the regular membership.  Plus, your entry is limited to like half hour before your class starts, and you can't use the equipment or pools unless it's part of the class you're taking.

Again, it has been awhile since I've been there, so this might be outdated information.  If you do end up getting a regular membership to take the aerobics classes, you'll love them!   When I was there, the instructors were great, and most of the classes were a lot of fun!

  • I take the aerobics classes, and I enjoy them.  All the instructors have been really cool. Its still a little extra for the yoga, so I haven't tried it.  I also like that I can go to the different places around town and get different classes.  (Not the same as some other gyms)
I have a regular memebership (70/month for DH and I, don't know about singletons).  DH uses the pool all the time, so it is worth it.  If its in the budget, I would recommend the extra $ for the full membership.

  • I think the regular membership (the Y calls it a Metro Membership) is about $43 or $44 for an adult.
  • Wait, Meghan, is that where I've seen you? I used to have a membership to the Gahanna Y and I knew there was someone working there I recognized but I never placed them exactly! (This was 2-3 years ago, when I was still young enough for the cheaper metro plan).

So...I guess I should have clarified that I belonged there before, but now I no longer need the full membership. But that's good to know about the aerobics classes. It doesn't make it very clear on what I'm seeing online (unless I'm missing it) that those are not included.
