Need to Vent!

I am just really upset that my bosses are making us come in one day this weekend to make up for not going to work on Saturday. They never cancelled work, so everyone that did not show up has to make it up. I just think that its a bit ridiculous that they expected us to be there in the first place, and had zero concern of the safety conditions. I just needed to vent. Thanks for listening!

Re: Need to Vent!

  • That stinks!  Where do you work?
  • To give alittle more detail we had to work off the Alum Creek exit. People were travling  from as far as Marion to work there that weekend. I personally was coming from Dublin.

  • I agree it does stink, but do you work in an industry where it is imperative that you show up to work, (health care industry, etc.)

  • As much as we might not like it, it's not our employer's responsibility to close down for bad weather.  It would be nice, yes, but it's not required.

I sat all day Friday listening to a co-worker complain because they wouldn't let us leave early.  She kept saying how they should be more concerned for our safety.  All I could think of was, if *I* were that concerned for *my* safety, I would have taken vacation time and gone home. If I'm not concerned enough about my own safety to take my own time to go home early (or stay home) then why should be employer be?

Are you allowed to take personal/vacation time for the day missed rather than make it up?  I'd do that.
  • I'm sorry.

Sue, I couldn't believe that Nationwide released all of their employees on Friday at 2. My boss let us go home earlier than that though. I was shocked!

  • No we are not medical. It is the National Guard, but all we were doing was a bunch of "paperwork". Instead of cancelling this weekend they cancelled Mon- Wed. It was a 6 day long event. We are back to our normal jobsite now. I just think that if safety comes first like they say that they wouldn't put us in a position to travel in those conditions. We had to reschedule the event for next month and we will be more than making up the time missed. I asked about taking a personal day they have not gotten back with me yet.
  • I'd be just as frustrated as you are....it may not be our employers responsibility but still, its nice to know your employer cares about you a little.  I work in finance, though....I think if I was a nurse or a doctor, I would def feel differently.
  • I know there isn't much I can do, but it just has had me pretty frustrated this morning.
  • I'd be upset too - I closed my office at 1pm on Friday and let my employees leave out of concern for their safety, but then again I'm a small law firm so I can do that pretty easily. I'm sorry you have to make up that day!
  • I understand your vent but I work for a company that provides medical interrpetation for hospitals and can't close down.  While I don't have to work weekends I didn't get to leave much earlier than normal and we had interpreters who went above and beyond and worked 16 hours straight so no one else had to drive in the bad weather. We didn't have anyone refuse to try to come in.  I luckily was able to do what was needed from home, you gotta love technology.
