DH and I just got back from returning a movie to the movie store, its not far so, as usual, we walked. Our street has not been plowed, an the surface of packed down snow was melted a little by the sun and is now a sheet of ice.
Meanwhile, High is relatively clear (at least the center two lanes), and traffic seemed to be moving about normal speed. We were in front of the movie store when an SUV hit some black ice and spun 150 degrees crashing hard into the snowbank/sidewalk. The driver was obviously OK, though it did nothing good for her bumper. She was stuck as well, we stood their wanting to help but not knowing what to do as she spun her tires (she obviously was really stressed and had no idea what to do, and she was sticking out into traffic and n one was stopping to give her a safe chance to get out, etc... it was rather disgusting how no one else who was driving seemed to care). Another pedestrian stepped up and got us coordinated and the three of us managed to push her out of the snow. Now I feel like a muscle man - doing what 4 wheel drive could not.
When we were walking home we tried to figure out what she lost control when no one else did, and with a closer look found that a lot of high was actually covered in black ice! She must have just tapped her break or adjusted her wheel a little bit in right the wrong spot as she hit a patch.
Anyways. be careful! Even if the street looks clear and dry, they could be slippery! And please, if you see anyone having trouble, stop and help!
