Moving Company: used one? Details please.. or recs

So.. i think we're moving early next month
and i'm thinking about the heavy stuff we have in our home and not liking the idea of having to figure out how to move it
we're only moving 11 miles away from where we currently are.. and i'm not sure how moving companies work

do they charge you based on truck load?
do they charge by trips or time ?

any recomendations of a good company or ones to steer clear of or affordability? :)

Thanks in advance!

Re: Moving Company: used one? Details please.. or recs

  • I've used Two Men and a Truck twice and loved them.  Not one broken/damaged item either time, and they were quick.  They charge by the hour, and both times sent out a third "man" at no cost.

The first move was from a 3rd floor apartment, and they had to remove a door and disassemble furniture to move it out, and they finished in the time it took Darren to get a haircut on a Saturday morning.  Literally - 2 hours.

We packed everything and had it in one room near the door, and they dropped off in one room.  All furniture was placed where it was supposed to go upon arrival and left where it was when they took it.

I think it was around $500.

  • We've used Leaders in the past and they were wonderful, very efficient yet careful.  They charge by the amount of stuff you are moving (like x dollars per box, y dollars per table, etc).
  • I've heard good comments about Leaders from a couple people.
  • Able Movers.  Have used them many times (even family used when I was a younger kid)

Very reasonable, great, honest etc.  Last move was about $300 total from an apt on west side to house in Northern Pickaway County.  Included very heavy furnitire up and down stairs.  Everything was moved within 3 hours.  Charge was by time so we helped move boxes and smaller things which they allow (some companies do not let you help)

    They are WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Did you guys get a house??!!

I love 2 men and a truck.  We used them all the time when I was in jr. high and high school.  Very dependable and friendly.

When I had to pay for my own movers, I used Leaders.  They were way less expensive and they were still nice and helpful.

  • I've used 2 men & a truck twice, and loved them both times.  They charge by the hour, but are VERY fast.  I think the first time I used them, they were done in 45 minutes (of course, it was only 1/2 a mile, but I went from a 3rd flr apt to a 2nd flr)...
  • We used A Family Moving Company last time and REALLY liked them.  They came highly recommended from several friends and family members.  We felt like we got a lot for our $ with them.
They do charge by the hour - - they can come out and take a look at what you have to move and give you an estimate.  We were shocked when they came in under their estimate and we had to pay them less than we were planning on.  A very pleasant surprise.
