OSU students-- Help!

Hi Ladies,

I am taking a graduate level course through OSU this quarter and I am feeling a bit frustrated with the professor.  Does anyone know if there is a guide or handbook that tells you what the professor can do in regards to changing coursework and grading?

She is very behind in grading assignments and her expectations are unclear. We have a final exam next week and she told us tonight that she could not provide a rubric for it until Monday and the final is worth 40% of our final grade. (the final is Tuesday) The few things that she has graded had a point value on them that was unrelated to the %s that were listed on the sllyabus. She said she didn't know how many total points could be earned for the course so there was no way to assess how we were doing at this point in the quarter

I am frustrated because I am anal and want to earn an A and want to know what is expected to earn it.  Is there anything at all I can do?

Thanks for reading this if you made it this far.

TIA

Jen

Re: OSU students-- Help!

  • I took a course in designing a whole program, so I feel like I know a lot about our rules.

The syllabus is considered a contract by the professor.  SO, whatever she wrote in there is what she has to do.  That includes assigning grades as was described in the syllabus.
If she didn't mention in the syllabus when/if she would provide a rubric, then there isn't too much that you can do.  She is NOT able to add or subtract assignments from the syllabus.
If you are having a problem, the first thing to do is to talk to the department head, if you are unable to talk to your prof. about it.  Chances are they have an idea about how she runs her class and have an eye on her already.  I hope she's not tenured...

  • I know that she is fairly new and has not taught a group of teachers before. I also know that her peers find her strange.

My concern is that every thing that she has given us is extremely vague and her expectations are very unclear. I feel uncomfortable taking this final exam and not know what to expect on it and don't know what grade I currently have.

  • I think it all comes down to what she gave you at the start of the quarter in the syllabus, if you are going to take any university action.  I know that's not the most fun answer.  But, if she didn't tell you she was going to tell you grades, or provide rubrics then she doesn't have to.
I had a course like that in undergrad.  We were able to get a revised syllabus around mid-quarter, that he had to stick to.  I think it might be too late for you though.
As I sit here and stress over/finish one of my 2 finals projects, DH reminds me that it won't ever matter if I graduate with a B+ or an A- average.  I'm going to be on the same payscale as everyone else who gets a masters and works for CCS.
    (Sorry, I"m long winded)
  • Oh, you can bring her up to the department head about her being vague. But, it won't help you, just anyone else who takes her classes later.
  • Yuck!! I graduated from OSU and I can honestly say that this is the worst professor I have ever had.  I have never had this experience before in either Undergrad or when I was working towards my Masters degree.  I guess I am anal and want clear expectation up front.
