installing new carpet?

Has anyone ever done this, or thought about doing this?  My dh and I would like to install new carpet in our new home but, we can't decide if it's better to go with a carpet company or a place like Lowes.  Does anyone have any experience, suggestions, or recommendations to share? TIA.

Re: installing new carpet?

  • DH and I replaced carpet in our entire house this summer. We went to Lowes, Home Depot, Levis 4 floors, Buddy's Carpet and Rite Rug.  We found that the quality of carpet was better at the carpet stores rather than Home Depot or Lowes.  Lowes or Home Depot was more expensive than the carpet store for carpet with less quality.    One thing that we found during our research is that Lowes and Home Depot hire private contractors to install the carpet and they don't always do the best job as far as laying the carpet and not showing seams.  When I talked to a few friends that had Lowes install carpet, there were some problems with their carpet and Lowes was not very helpful in solving the problems.

I highly recommend Stainmaster carpet.  My dog has gotten sick a few times and the stains came right up with the spray that they give you. It looks like we just installed it yesterday.

  • We went with HD last summer and have no complaints.  We are pretty pleased with the quality and have had no issues with the installation.  It's been in the house since August.  We also have a 150lb. dog who  treks around on it too and again, no issues.

Our biggest thing was, we aren't planning on being in the house for very much longer (year or two) and we wanted something newer and nicer, but not that huge of investment and I think it will help when we put the house on the market.
