can I still vote if...

I'm registered under my maiden name and in a different county.

I realize I've had plenty of time to take care of this, but I seriously just lost track of time since we've been crazy busy the past couple of months!  I am currently registered to vote in Stark County and under my maiden name.  Can I still vote in my current county (Franklin) and under my married name?  Would I just take a recent utility bill and my license to prove my married name (or would I need to take something like my marriage abstract)?

Thanks!

Re: can I still vote if...

  • I would imagine you would need your abstract of marriage and a utility bill but then you will still vote with a provisional ballot.  Honestly though, you should call the Board of Elections and verify that with them.
  • What does your passport say?  I just use my passport because I hadn't changed my name with the voting people.  My passport still had my  maiden name on it.  It worked in Georgia so hopefully it will work for you?  But I would still check.
  • I am 99% sure they will not let you vote under a different name, no matter what evidence you bring. You will need an ID with your old name on it.

I also think (but am not so sure) that you have to vote in the precinct in which you are registered, or by absentee ballot. I would call the election board and see what your options are, you may be able to go down to the state election board and submit an absentee ballot.
  • if you were previously registered at your address in franklin county then you can vote a provisional ballot with your new married name with the appropriate documentation.  This will effectivly change your voter registration.

If you were not registered at your address before I would suggest calling the Franklin County board of electrions to see if you can still vote, however I think you might have missed your deadline.

    Here's the BOE website

  • thanks for the link... I wasn't sure where to look.  I'll have to give them a call and get an answer. :)  I appreciate the help!
