POLL: Going green in Columbus

About how green would you say you/your family is? Not at all / Thinking about it / Do some things / Actively going green

Do you/Would you take reusable bags to the grocery store and shopping?

Have you replaced your bulbs?

Do you totally unplug?

Do you recycle?

Has the environmental effect factored into any purchases?

What (if any) other ways are you doing to go green?

Re: POLL: Going green in Columbus

  • 1. Thinking about it
    2. Yes, thought about it
    3.  Some, not all. Our electrical work sucks. I have replaced 4 "green" bulbs already!
    4.  No
    5.  Kind of - C-bus does it for me and I put excess paper in the Shred-It bin at work
    6.  I try to be recycled paper products when available.

  • About how green would you say you/your family is? Do some things, constantly looking for new things to add to our daily routine.

Do you/Would you take reusable bags to the grocery store and shopping?  We are just starting to do this.

Have you replaced your bulbs?  Some

Do you totally unplug?  No, but do at least partially

    Do you recycle?  Yep

Has the environmental effect factored into any purchases?  Yes

What (if any) other ways are you doing to go green?
Turning off the water while we brush our teeth.  I *love* Method bathroom wipes in eucalyptus mint.  They're biodegradable & flushable.  We only wash large loads of laundry.  Trying to purchase products that have less packaging.  Using a store bought water bottle, instead of buying bottled water in bulk; we use our brita to refill the bottle, wash & reuse.  We switched to a water saver shower head.  We reuse our paper shreds from our shredder for packing things we send.
Good poll!  Can't wait to get more good ideas to help live "greener"!

  • About how green would you say you/your family is?  Do some things

Do you/Would you take reusable bags to the grocery store and shopping? We don't do this because we reuse the bags for everthing from trash bags and diaper pail bags to reusing them at the grocery store.

Have you replaced your bulbs? Half of our house has energy saving bulbs. We replace them as they burn out, but some of our fixtures will not accomodate the bulky CFL bulbs.

Do you totally unplug? For most things. If we use the item more than once a day we don't.

Do you recycle? I take stuff to the recycling center, but not all the time because it's a hassle to store it and then take it to drop it off.

Has the environmental effect factored into any purchases? For cleaning agents mostly.

What (if any) other ways are you doing to go green? When deciding to quit my job to stay at home, we realized that we would use less gas for my car. I was right, I fill up my tank once every 6 weeks now instead of once every 2 weeks. It also saves us a lot of money.

  • 1.  We do some things

    2.  No...Kroger bags make excellant poopy diaper disposable.

    3.  Most of them...we do it as they burn out, and we have some light fixtures in the bathroom that the "green" bulbs don't fit

    4.  No

    5.  We recycle newspapers/magazines.  Waste management (our trash people) recycles all trash.  They actually have people who sort trash.  yuck.

    6.  Yeah...we were more inclined to buy Energy Star Appliances and while storm door shopping last night, we passed up a few becuase they weren't Energy Star.  And I had DH buy the new "green" clorox products today.

    7.  I can't think of any...
  • Actively going green We replace bulbs with CFL's as the old ones burn out. We unplug lamps/ clocks in spare rooms, chargers, and small coutertop kitchen appliances. YES! We recycle more than we throw away every week. Yes, we try to buy eco friendly cleaning supplies and paper goods. I will not buy foam plates or cups for cook outs. We bought some re-usable cookout dishes last year. PP, I LOVE the Clorox Green Works. I have the TB cleaner, All Purpose cleaner, and the dilutable. I made 2 bottles of the dilutable, one to keep on each floor. I've scrubbed baseboards, doors, sinks, toilets, switchplate covers...LOVE the smell, and the price is nice too.
  • BuckeyeBabe, My sister lives in an 80 year old house and she had issues with CFL's burning out really fast. Turns out she was screwing them in too tight! I hope your problem is that easy to solve.

    ---doing some things

Do you/Would you take reusable bags to the grocery store and shopping?

---yes, we do.  they hold a lot more and make it easier to bring in groceries from the car.

    Have you replaced your bulbs?

    ---not yet

    Do you totally unplug?

---no, we should.  I will start today.

    Do you recycle?

---we did, but rumpke took our bin?!?!?!  it's AMAZING how much you can recycle.  really cuts down on trash!!

Has the environmental effect factored into any purchases?

    --yes

What (if any) other ways are you doing to go green?

---this sounds gross, but we don't use trash bags.  we just dump our trash can into the bin.  we rinse it if it gets nasty - cuts down on plastic bags.  I always ask for re-usable paper bags at stores like Gymboree or Macy's, and re-use them.  If I forget my grocery cloth bags, I get paper.  We ONLY use vinegar and water for cleaning products.  NO chemicals.  It's so much healtheir and so family-friendly.
  • i'm thinking about it

unsure. i do use our plastic bags. but maybe i would find other ways to carry those things, if i didnt have them around.

i just bought some new ones today. our regulars burn out all the time, i'll start replacing them as they burn out.

no, but i've decided to start unplugging today.

    we dont

not yet, but im sure it will

    none so far

  • About how green would you say you/your family is? Do some things

Do you/Would you take reusable bags to the grocery store and shopping?  Yes and I take my Giant Eagle cloth bags into Target.  I love how much more they hold and how much easier they are to carry.

Have you replaced your bulbs?   I hate CFLs because they are so dark when you first turn on the light.  It's like you didn't even turn it on.  I'm waiting for LED light bulbs to become more accessible, then I'll replace with those.

    Do you totally unplug?  Nope.

Do you recycle?  In UA, you pay per bag of trash, but recycling is free, so we recycle a much as we can.

Has the environmental effect factored into any purchases?  Not really.

What (if any) other ways are you doing to go green?  Can't think of any.

  • Do you/Would you take reusable bags to the grocery store and shopping? We recycle them and plan to buy reusable ones.

Have you replaced your bulbs?  Currently have replaced 50% We're waiting for them to burn out to replace.

    Do you totally unplug? No

    Do you recycle? Yes

Has the environmental effect factored into any purchases? I need to think about that one...

What (if any) other ways are you doing to go green? We drive cars that get better than 30 mpg and only choose cars with high MPG.
  • About how green would you say you/your family is? Actively going green

Do you/Would you take reusable bags to the grocery store and shopping?  Yes!  I never get plastic bags.  If I forget mine at home, I just carry all the items right out of the store.  Sometimes the people at clothing stores look at me weird but I don?t care.  I just tell them they should offer something other than plastic bags!

Have you replaced your bulbs?  Every single one including my outdoor lights

Do you totally unplug? Yep!  Anything that we don?t use daily.  We also have timers on our lights.

    Do you recycle?  Yeppers

Has the environmental effect factored into any purchases? We are thinking about a new car but aren?t 100% sold on the hybrid.  We are also trying to do more environmentally friendly things in the back yard.

What (if any) other ways are you doing to go green?  We bought a hot water heater blanket but DH told me I had to put it on.  So it?s been sitting in our closet for about a year now.  Ugh!  I just need do to it!  We also only use
    biodegradable doggie poo bags.

  • About how green would you say you/your family is? We do some things

Do you/Would you take reusable bags to the grocery store and shopping?
Yes, sometimes when I remember to bring them.

    Have you replaced your bulbs?
We have some replaced, we're also waiting for the old ones to burn out first.

    Do you totally unplug?
    No.

    Do you recycle?
We try to recycle the newspaper

Has the environmental effect factored into any purchases?
    Yes

What (if any) other ways are you doing to go green?
When DH & I buy a house, we're going to put in geothermal heat.
  • About how green would you say you/your family is? Not at all

Do you/Would you take reusable bags to the grocery store and shopping? I don't, and I doubt that I will, unless I'd just be going out for a few things.

Have you replaced your bulbs? I've replaced some of them, for the cost savings benefits.

    Do you totally unplug? No.

    Do you recycle? No.

Has the environmental effect factored into any purchases? No.

What (if any) other ways are you doing to go green? Nothing.
  • About how green would you say you/your family is? Actively green-ish

Do you/Would you take reusable bags to the grocery store and shopping? Yes - I have been for a while.

Have you replaced your bulbs? Outside bulbs - yes. Inside - I can't stand the peachy glow. I think I read about more colors being available now though - if they had whiter light I'd switch.

Do you totally unplug? Most stuff that we don't use constantly stays unplugged.

Do you recycle? Yes. I also collect recycling from our office and take it home - it drives me crazy to see the most basic recyclables in the trash!

Has the environmental effect factored into any purchases? Somewhat - I wish we had more money to change things. Our new appliances are energy star, so I guess that's a start.

What (if any) other ways are you doing to go green? On my to-do list - start composting (just a small box) to cut back on food trash, also I'd love to set up a system that collects rainwater (sump pump water goes into a collection bin) then you can use the rainwater to water your plants/yard.
  • 1.  Do some things

    2.  Not usually, although I do to some stores like Whole Foods that give a discount.  That being said, I "reuse" my bags to walk my dog.

    3. Most -- but not the "funky" sized ones.

    4.  Just started doing this.  Most of our lights are unplugged and need to get on/off switches for the tvs.

    5.  YES.  We're down to about a bag of trash a week!

    6.  We thought about buying a flex fuel car but in the end didn't because the tax incentives expired in 2007.

    7.  We carpool to work almost every day.  We don't water our lawn even when its dry.
  • About how green would you say you/your family is? Not at all / Thinking about it / Do some things / Actively going green

    Have you replaced your bulbs?
We are replacing as they burn out

    Do you totally unplug?
