local taxes ?

If you get a w-2 and live in one city and work in another, do you have to file locally for the city in which you work?

Re: local taxes ?

  • I'm pretty sure you only file where you live.  I once lived in Powell and worked in Dublin.  I filed for Dublin and they sent it back to me.
  • DH said it depends on where you work and where you live.  Differnt cities have different rules.  You live in Powell, right? Where do you work?

  • I've always filed where I lived.
  • I'm pretty sure that you file where you live, unless where you work has a higher rate.  For example, I think Columbus's rate is 2%.  If Powell is 1.4% for example, you might have to pay the other 0.6% to Columbus.  Does your employer withhold?  If so, just confirm that they took it out at the right rate and you don't even need to file.

My employer didn't withhold at all and I missed it, got audited, and will now have to file for probably the rest of my life..... :(

  • Columbus City tax division has an annex (if that's the correct term) with several many cities in the surrounding areas.  Cbus will withhold 2% and they take care of making sure if it's been allocated to the correct place, like Julie said.  Make sure that you're employer is withholding the correct amount.
