Anyone in a Franklin's Master program?

I am starting to think about going back to school, although I don't think I'm interested in an MBA. Too many classes on subjects I have no interest in (accounting, operations - ick). Franklin has a masters program for marketing which I think would work perfectly for me. But I wanted to get some insight on how Franklin is as a school, if you like how your program is run, how much time you have to invest each week in studying and if you have found it hard on your marriage being in school. DH completely supports me in going back and said he would help more with housework, cooking, etc, but I am a little worried it will still be a strain on us at times. We spend so much time together now, so me studying and not being able to hang out as much would be a major adjustment. Although, it might be good - he'll have to learn to cook something other than spaghetti! :)

Any advice you can give would be appreciated. This is a big decision for me and I know many of you have been through a similar situation. TIA!

Re: Anyone in a Franklin's Master program?

  • I went to Otterbein but I did it part time while working full time.  I am not going to lie, it is very difficult.  There were days that I would be at work around 7:30 or 8:00, leave here at 5:15 or 5:30 then go to class until 9:00 or 10:00.  I would get home sometime between 9:45 to 10:30 and would be exhausted.  I had also just started dating DH at that point.  One thing I noticed though is that my MBA program seemed easier than my undergrad program.  I think part of that is that most of the professors in the MBA program were adjunct so they understood how hard it was to be at work all day then go to class at night.  Good luck if you decide to go for it!
  • Jason, my DH, got his MBA from Franklin right after we got married. It took a lot of time but it was a fairly short program, 18 months, I think and it was worth it in the end.
  • My husband did his MBA at Franklin.I think he did the Business side. He said the work was easy but tedious and very time consuming. He probably did about an hour or two of school work every night and then would lock himself in our office and work for an entire Sunday about once a month. It was very time consuming but he is really glad he did it.
  • I did my MBA there, i finished in dec of 2006.
I enjoyed my time there, grad school was so much "better" then under grad for me, interms of enjoyment of the stuff i was learning etc.

I'm going to try and answer the rest of your questions with as much info as possible...

I invested about 4-5 hours a week outside of class on HW and such, some of it was group work, but didn't mean we all had to be at the same place at the same time, just good at collaboration. Also some of the prof's would let class end early so that if the week was heavy in group work we could take some of our class time and do the work before the class time was over so we woudln't have to find additional time during the week.

I know the program has changed a little bit since I did it but I did the "life cycle" discipline where you see the life cycle of a business from conception to when it's starting to go down hill in the course of 17 months, and then did a "focus" on Computer Science. Sounds like your focus would be Marketing.

In terms of stress on marriage by the extra time you need for school, when i was doing the program, my husband we had just started going out . . . and then by the end of the program (17 months) we were much closer and he was the one making sure I got my HW done before we spent time together and such.. so it was actually nice to have support and someone to lean one, and to help push me through when i was like i just don't wanna do this anymore!

Hope this helps, please feel free to ask other questions!
  • My husband got his Masters in Computer Science at Franklin. I'll agree with the others that it's reeeeally hard on your marriage. We hadn't been married a year yet, and had also sold our condo, bought a house... a few things going on. He would work 9-5, go to classes, and get home around 10 or 10:30 3 days a week, plus extra time for group projects. He imposed the crazy schedule on himself, but wanted to finish quickly. We just didn't get to see much of each other, and I got tired of being the one stuck at home with all the responsibilities. But, he was done quickly, we got through it ok, and are still happily married :)

His overall opinion of Franklin's classes was pretty low. He only had 2-3 classes that he actually learned new things, and none have been remotely applicable to his career. One class became so remedial (most people didn't speak English in the class, yes, in the masters program...) and they spent the entire class reviewing the difference between it's, its, and its'.

Although it was easy, and he technically has an masters degree, he seriously wondered about the credibility of it being from Franklin, if it carried as much weight as other schools in town.

Their more popular degrees (MBA) are probably better, I'd guess, and they are really geared to working professionals taking their classes.

Even though it's really hard at the time, we both believe that education is absolutely worth the effort, money, etc. Especially if you can do it now, before having a family - you and your husband can work through it, and you can probably get done faster now too.

    Good luck with your decision!
  • Thanks for all your advice. It was very helpful! I've requested a packet of info from them and will schedule a meeting with one of their advisors. Lots of pros and cons to weigh over in the next couple of weeks...
