Get to see a movie, but which one?

I am going to see a movie this Sunday (due to the lack of football). The problem is there are SO many out I want to see. Does anyone have any recommendations or reviews? Here is my list of what I want to see:

Atonement
The Bucket List
Charlie Wilsons War
Cloverfield
I am Legend
Juno
The Kite Runner
No Country for Old Men
Orphanage
Sweeney Todd
Waterhorse

Its completely my call since we are using a giftcard I got for Xmas. I am leaning towards Sweeney Todd, Atonement, or Orphanage, but I really don't know. What do you all think?

Re: Get to see a movie, but which one?

  • I saw Cloverfield this weekend. It made DH feel like he had motion sickness. I didn't pick it, and I can't say I really enjoyed it, but I didn't really expect it would be my taste. If it'd been my choice, I would have seen Juno.
  • I've only seen Juno and Sweeney Todd out of that list, which were both fantastic.  I would have to say Juno though, it's just so funny and touching.  Unless you're in the mood to see a lot of blood and a great performance by Johnny Depp.
  • The thing I always consider in choosing a movie when I want to see a lot is which movies wold be best to see in theater... while I really want to see Juno, I figure its a movie that does not gain anything from being on a big screen, whereas the visuals of orphanage or music of sweeny todd might...
  • vote for atonement:

I saw this over the weekend at rave (love that theater) and thought it was really well done. Pretty artsy in parts but it fit with the overall movie and how it played out. Acting was really good, and some of the sets were amazing. I'd go check it out now that it is not on such limited release

  • Juno!  I loved this movie, super funny and sweet as well.  My parents saw I am Legend and said it was awful.
  • I saw "I Am Legend", and although I'm sure it isn't the best movie on the list, I think it would be worth it to see.  Will Smith actually gives a pretty memorable performance.  It does have a lot of special effects, so it would probably be better to see it on the big screen.  HTH!
  • Juno!  Hands down!  My hubby even loved it!
  • I saw Juno and thought it was very good.  However, my DH would have fallen asleep in the first 10min so I don't know if I would recommend it with a guy.  I've heard Cloverfield is just ok (although more of a guy movie).  I know Sweeney Todd and Charlie Wilson's War have gotten great reviews so I would probably recommend one of those.  Atonement got snubed for Oscars.

  • I have seen several of these films and although I think you would like any of them, the one that is best viewed in the thearter has to be I am Legend.  It really is a jump out at you kind of movie.

Now I have not seen cloverfield (I think DH is planning a secret date night this weekend and will take me to this) but like someone said before I have heard some complain about the motion sickness thing, but that also means to me it would be best seen in the thearter too.

    Best of luck!
  • I've seen I am Legend and Cloverfield on your list.

I am Legend: it's pretty good and a good movie to see on the big screen.  Will Smith and the dog are pretty much the only characters on screen for most of the movie. It made me jump in parts, but was entertaining and we enjoyed it more than we thought we would.

Cloverfield: I hated it. The jumpy camera made me feel slightly nauseous at times; the characters were all really annoying, so I wasn't sad when some of them died; stupid love story angle to keep the plot going; sappy sweet romantic talk part of the way in that was pointless and ruined the flow of the movie; not scary to me at all. Blair Witch was scary because you never saw what was terrorizing them so it was very psychological--Cloverfield, you see the monster and it's just dumb.

On your list, I really want to see Atonement, Juno, Sweeney Todd, and the Kite Runner.  I have heard very good things about all of them.

  • I just saw Juno and loved it - it is very wittty and funny. That being said, I'm pretty sure my DH would have wanted to kill himself during that movie. If you go to the theatre mainly for movies that show better on the big screen, Juno is probably a good rental for you instead.
  • I'm bitter and don't want to see "I am Legend" cause I accidently found out the ending.

We won passes to Atonement, still need to go.

Kiterunner was a really good book, hopefully the movie lives up to it.

Saw Juno and both Josh & I enjoyed it.
  • Juno! My fav on the list. I will definitely purchase the DVD when it comes out. However, I agree, it might not be necessary to see on a big screen. So, my 2nd choice:

Charlie Wilson's War - you won't be disappointed.

  • We saw 4 of the above:

Atonement:  I liked it a lot, however it was pretty dramatic (a-la Titanic)...so if you are into that sorta thing its pretty good.

Charlie Wilsons War:  Better than I thought!  I'm not too into politics, but I thought it was a good movie and Tom Hanks was really good in it.

I am Legend:  Wasn't my favorite movie... I loved the scenes of New York all empty, but hated the scary suspenseful parts... I didn't know it was mostly a zombie movie...

Juno:  My favorite of all 4!  This was truly a great movie!  Even DH liked it... I would highly recommend this one to you, you cant go wrong.
